There was a blow for Team Ireland on Monday night when Ciara Mageean was ruled out of the Games with an Achilles injury.

The 32-year-old, from Portaferry in County Down, was due to take part in this morning's women's 1500m heats.

Mageean was second to Laura Muir in the event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham but won the 1500m European title earlier this summer.

"I'm absolutely heartbroken not to be able to compete in my third Olympic Games," she said.

"I gave it everything to make it possible to be on the start line, but time was against me. I want to thank everyone for all their support."

Here's a look at what's happened so far this morning at the Paris Olympics:

It’s a glorious morning at the Stade de France, but there’s a notable name missing for Team Ireland.

Ciara Mageean has been the face of athletics for a long time now, but she was forced with withdraw from the 1500m late last night after losing her race to recover from an Achilles injury.

It’s the latest Olympic heartbreak for Mageean, 32, who was heading into what would have been her third Games off the back of her stunning European gold in June.

She narrowly missed out on the final on her Olympic debut in Rio, and a calf injury a week before her heat stopped her progressing in Tokyo.

It’s even more of a shame given the success for athletes from Northern Ireland and Team Ireland so far in Paris, and Mageean deserved a chance to ride that wave into her event.

'Great Britain have two great riders and two comfortable horses'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 6 August

    Individual jumping final

    Rishi Persad

We are expecting a big finish, primarily because Team GB have the defending champion in their ranks, Ben Maher. We've already had some dramatic news from Versailles, Harry Charles is out. His horse Romeo suffered an overreach, a little cut that is enough to keep him out of today's final. Mario Deslauriers, who finished 31st in qualifying, is now in the final.

All 30 riders will jump off at the course behind me. All those who make it clear, or have the fewest penalty points, then make it to the jump-off, unless one rider or two riders pick up fewer penalty points or go clear.

What typically happens is a few riders go into the jump-off, then it's also fewest penalties plus time. If, of course, there are further people tied, there will of course be more jump-offs until they get to the winners of the gold, silver and bronze. We have two great riders for Great Britain, Ben Maher and Scott Brash.

Scott Brash is on a horse that is very, very reliable and a top class showjumper, Jefferson. Scott is a gold medal winner here and at London in 2012. We have got two riders who have been at very top of their game, two horses who are comfortable show jumping.

Team GB going for more equestrian medalspublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 6 August

At 9:00 BST, GB’s Scott Brash and Ben Maher are in action in the individual finals at the equestrian.

Here's a basic explainer for you to get to grips with before it starts:

    • The 30 finalists attempt to clear 12-15 fences against the clock.
    • Maher will be the fourth to compete and Brash will be 20th.
    • The first five equestrian events in Versailles have yielded five British medals: two gold and three bronze. Great Britain have never claimed silverware in all six events at the same Olympics but, given their team jumping gold five days ago, there is a genuine chance of an unprecedented podium sweep.
    • Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam and Daniel Coyle qualified second and third respectively behind ‘flying Frenchman’ Julien Epaillard – who is vying to be the first rider to win individual gold in this event at a home Olympics since American Joe Fargis in 1984.

Speaking of Keely Hodgkinson, the Olympic 800m champion has been chatting to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning: "It was incredible and it felt amazing.

"I remember thinking 'nothing is guaranteed till you have crossed the line in first place', for so many silvers in the last couple of years I am super happy to have upgraded to a gold."

On her family: "Family is everything to me. Even my siblings have had to make sacrifices when my parents have taken me to training - they have had to suffer the consequences of that.

"There was so much pressure and I have been a contender for a gold medal, but for people to write me down as a favourite is a privileged position but it can be quite scary.

"I haven't been on a family holiday since 2019. I am going to join them in a few days - I'll be on the beach having a nice glass of rose wine!"

On her coaches: "They have so much self-belief in me and we have created something really special, thankfully it was enough and it is a 'we moment, we did this'."

British trio Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant won Team GB's first gold medal in the velodrome last night setting a new world record of 45.186 seconds.

Team GB 2012 track cyclist Danielle Rowe spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about the British trio: "They’ve set the bar high for the track riders in the velodrome. It was an outstanding ride and you can see how united they are as a team - that speaks volumes for the British cycling team and their quest in this Games."

Rowe, added: "To win the gold medal is absolutely huge and it is going to se the momentum.

"The extra motivation for the whole of the team is similar to London 2012. We watched the men’s team pursuit get gold in London 2012 - it gave you that little bit extra."

One of the best things about the Olympics is the chance to watch sports that you may not usually get a chance to, but then find yourselves getting madly invested (probably too much!).

We've all been there - screaming at the telly for the trap shooting final on a random Tuesday afternoon, critiquing elite divers and gymnasts as we lie on the sofa with an array of snacks.

Yesterday's kayak cross, with Joe Clarke winning silver for GB, was one of those moments where we get to enjoy a brilliantly bonkers sport in all its glory.

We want to know what is your favourite Olympic sport to watch - and it can be for any reason, whether it's the excitement, the skill, how niche it is?

And yes - we will accept submissions including the Plunge for Distance in 1904 (competitors had to dive in the pool and see how far they could drift underwater until they surfaced), the pigeon shooting or even the poodle clipping, which both featured in 1900.
