Not many would disagree that tonight's 1500m showdown between Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the most anticipated - and potentially dramatic - in the athletics offering at Paris 2024.

But the women's 400m hurdles final is right up there.

Both defending champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Dutch world champion Femke Bol make it safely through to Thursday's final, while the excitement in the stadium surrounding France's Louise Maraval's successful qualification adds another dimension to the medal race.

McLaughlin-Levrone will be favourite as the fastest woman in history.

But make no mistake, Bol is in serious form, as shown in her spectacular dash for mixed 4x400m relay gold, and ready to push her all the way.

It is refreshing. The rivalries make a huge difference. Josh Kerr is confident but he is not confident without everything behind him.

The races that he has done, the times that he has put down and that gold medal from last year.

He's riding that wave of success and he is really going to be a huge threat to Jakob Ingebrigtsen tonight.

    Andrew Rogers
BBC Newsbeat reporter at Edinburgh Athletic Club

    Lee McConnell

One of the big names here at Josh Kerr’s former club in Edinburgh is Lee McConnell. She ran the 400m race for Team GB in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and will now be watching with fellow club members as the city’s own goes for gold.

McConnell says so much of Team GB’s success in recent games has been down to funding for grassroots sport – and she’s keen to get the word out about how National Lottery money has played a big part in that.

Josh is far from the only Olympian to start his journey at Meadowbank Sports Centre. Lee did too.

“This was here when I was a kid but it’s been torn down and rebuilt with a lot of National Lottery funding”, she says.

“We really need that funding. You only need to look back to the 1996 Olympics and see how many medals we won”

She’s referring, of course, back to the Games where just three medals were won by Team GB in Atlanta.

It was tough, but Emma Hayes' USA have just done enough to see off Germany, winning 1-0 after extra time. They will face the winner of Brazil v Spain, which kicks off at 8pm.

Hayes had won seven Women's Super League titles (including the past five seasons in a row) before taking over as the United States head coach at the end of last season.

    A false start.

Anna Cockrell had her hand raised on the blocks well before the starting gun.

The stewards are meeting to discuss whether they accept - an anxious wait for the American.

A green card and it's all good for Cockrell to stay on the blocks for this final semi-final.

    Off they go...

Bol won bronze at Tokyo 2020 and picked up gold at the 2023 World Championships.

She has already won gold in Paris as part of the 4×400m mixed relay.

Team GB's Jessie Knight has her work cut out here.

'We could really enjoy it'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 6 August

Track cycling - men's team sprint final

The Team GB trio spoke to BBC TV after winning silver in the men's team sprint final.

Ed Lowe: "I'm ecstatic, silver medal, something I didn't think was possible going into this so second place, I'll definitely take that to the Dutch. Huge credit to these boys as well, so pleased."

Hamish Turnball: "I'm buzzing. We weren't expecting to fight for gold, we were chasing the bronze really so to get into that gold final, all stress was off. We could really enjoy it, soak up the crowd and show everyone what we could do without really any pressure on our backs.

"Huge credit to Ed, because he didn't make it easy for me, fast boy to follow in that first lap but we put three clean rides together and that's what got us the silver medal being clean across the day."

Jack Carlin: "Feeling really good. As a team, we came and delivered. The best probably we could have done on the day. Hamish rode flat which in Tokyo I didn't do that for Jason [Kenny] and he paid the consequences, I've obviously came off fresher.

"Two boys that came in without any experience really at this kind level and they've really stepped up and I'm really proud of them."

Great Britain could not have achieved more. Different class the Netherlands in men's team sprinting here.

Great Britain gave absolutely everything, finished with the silver. They will have known they were really up against it.

That's a 14th Olympic, world or European medal for Jack Carlin now, but none of them are the colour he really wants.

Silver might be some sort of balm for the sting of missing out again but, just like on the podium in Tokyo, there will be a Dutchman or three celebrating some unfathomable feat of cycling on the step above him.
