Track cycling - men's keirin first round

The Netherlands' Harrie Lavreysen wins heat two with Jack Carlin picking up second - 0.361 seconds further back - to advance to the quarter-finals.

There was a nervy moment on lap two when Carlin's back wheel flicked out and almost caused a crash but he managed to steady himself and get back on track.

Weightlifting is simple to follow, even if you are not a purist.

Each competitor has three attempts at the snatch and clean and jerk. The best attempt of each type of lift are added together for a combined score.

We have just had the snatch part of the competition, where athletes lift above their heads in one movement, and Ecuador’s Neisi Dajomes Patricia leads with 122kg.

She won gold at Tokyo 2020 and has thousands of fans cheering for her. There were concerned murmurs when she failed her first attempt but she corrected it on her second.

Norway’s Solfrid Koanda attempted an Olympic record 124kg but it proved too much and she settled for 121kg instead.

It’s fascinating how each weightlifter has their own unique way of preparing backstage, which we can see on the big screens.

Then when they come up on to the stage, some have their coaches shouting encouragement when they lift, others are ice cool in silence.

On to the clean and jerk we go, where the medals will be decided.

Jack Carlin broke his ankle in April, making his two medals here in Paris all the more special - and remarkable.

He's going for his third in the keirin, the event he admitted yesterday was more his focus than the individual sprint.

He's had a tough draw in the first round, with Dutch sensation Harrie Lavreysen in his heat.

The top two of each six-rider heat progress to the quarter-finals, the rest go into the repechages.

The United States are really struggling defensively to clear their lines.

Brazil have no fear, I've never known a team to celebrate defending like they do.

They think - go, go, go as they back themselves defensively.

For the second sunny afternoon running, this is a helter-skelter final.

Unlike yesterday's eight-goal men's thriller between France and Spain we haven't seen a (legal) goal.

    One won't be far away.

Both sides are intent on attacking with pace and purpose as plays sweeps from one end to the other.

A cracking watch and the noise accompanying it is off the charts.

We have a cooling break after half an hour of the women's football final, amid high temperatures in Paris.

It has been a good watch so far - Brazil had a goal ruled out for offside, while USA came close when Mallory Swanson was denied one on one by Brazilian keeper Lorena.

Does it really have to be that loud?

Malaysia's Awang disqualifiedpublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 10 August

Track cycling - men's keirin first round

We've got five heats to come in the men's keirin with six riders in each of them.

The first heat - no Brits in this one - has just got under way.

Oh! We have a problem here.

As mentioned earlier in the 'what is the keirin' explainer entry (re: 16:21) riders are not allowed to pass the pacing motorbike (derny) until just three laps remain but Malaysia's Azizulhasni Awang, who was expected to be a key contender for a medal, has gone too soon.

He went beyond the derny before it had peeled off the track and has subsequently been disqualified.

We will begin this heat again.

Bikes, bikes everywhere. I'd love to know how much all the equipment in this velodrome would come to at the till.

If you were with us the other day, I gave an insight into the cost of the track bikes here, as they all have to be commercially available. The bike used by Team GB would set you back a cool £55,000.

But that's nothing. The frame alone of the Japanese bike costs....wait for it...more than £100,000.

    Some serious technology on show.

  11. Germany clinch bronze thanks to Berger's late penalty savepublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 10 August

    Women's football

While USA and Brazil compete for gold and silver, the destination of the bronze has already been decided.

Germany beat world champions Spain to win bronze in the Olympic women's football at Paris 2024.

Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal, converting from the penalty spot on 65 minutes after she was clumsily fouled by Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll.

There was late drama as Spain were handed a lifeline with a penalty seven seconds from time, but Alexia Putellas was denied by a fine save by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger

What is the keirin?published at 16:21 British Summer Time 10 August

    If you need a reminder...

In the keirin, riders follow a pacing motorbike or electric bike called a derny, which gradually increases in speed from 30km/h to 50km/h.

Before the start of the race, riders draw lots to decide on their position behind the derny.

After 750m, the derny peels off the track and a three-lap sprint begins.

I cannot describe the noise that went up inside the Grand Palais as France's Althea Laurin secured her place in the women's +67kg gold medal match later this evening.

Flags everywhere, feet stamping, temporary stands rattling... astonishing. Laurin has had about six separate standing ovations. The crowds have really got behind the home athletes no matter the event in Paris.

A huge roar as France's Mathilde Gros takes her spot on the starting block to face Hetty van de Wouw of the Netherlands in heat five.

Van de Wouw stalks her opponent for the first lap at snails pace before swooping down the ridge to go on the attack.

It's initially well defended by Gros, who has what sounds like the entire velodrome cheering for her, but Van de Wouw eventually finds another gear and takes the win by 0.245 seconds.

    Very flamboyant.

You won't be surprised to learn that is Trinity Rodman - daughter of NBA legend Dennis, who is known for his eccentric style as well as his basketball skills.
