This is the sort of training scenario that squeezes the grey matter as well as wringing the muscles dry.

So far England, without their fly-half and down to 14 men, have negotiated Marcus Smith's sin-binning expertly.

They have slowed down play, kicked cleverly and picked their moments well to commit to rucks.

Four minutes left on the yellow card by my maths.

Maro Itoje cut a resigned figure speaking to Ben O'Keeffe there having already been told off by the New Zealander earlier in the game.

He knew Marcus Smith was in trouble.

Ireland have been under the pump - can they make this count?

Andrew: Sam Prendergast is a great talent with bags of potential, but he doesn't half play with a relaxed style. He never rushes, so he's always under pressure at this level.

It's a long throw from the line-out to Bundee Aki, who does what he does best and charges forward.

Mack Hansen spots a gap and beats two men. His offload finds Ryan Baird and the back row is five metres out.

Under the guidance of Jacques Nienaber, the majority of Ireland's players are now playing with a different defensive system week to week at Leinster.

Missed tackles are almost viewed as an occupational hazard under the South African's high risk/high reward methods but it's striking to see green jerseys falling off so many here.

Seven already in the opening quarter.

  15. Postpublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

The left boot of James Lowe brings play up to half-way, and England will have the line out.

They win it but kick it long, and Lowe has a second chance to hammer it clear.

  16. 'England have a lot of game breakers'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Ireland 0-7 England

    Tommy Bowe
Former Ireland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

England are finding spaces all over Ireland. An Irish team that is usually so solid in defence. England have a lot of game breakers.

  17. England plan coming togetherpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Ireland 0-7 England

    Mike Henson
    BBC Sport at Aviva Stadium

England coach Steve Borthwick will be well pleased by what he has seen in the first 20 minutes. His quicksilver back row have been a breakdown pest, forcing Ireland to commit time and men when they would rather be playing fast. The line-out, barring a fumbled first, has held up OK. And the defensive passage on their own line was full-throated and successful in shutting out the hosts.

England's line speed is causing Ireland a lot of trouble. There were doubts over it before the game.
