Kyren Wilson is bidding to add to his five ranking titles by capturing the biggest of them all over the Bank Holiday weekend here in Sheffield.

One of his earlier triumphs was at the 2019 German Masters - when he beat a certain David Gilbert 9-7 in the final from 7-5 down.

Boy, will Kyren be relieved to finish that frame off. Very relieved.

That was 42 minutes long. The longest frame of the match. That could have gone either way.

Kyren Wilson gets the green, meaning Dave Gilbert needs two snookers now.

Gilbert isn't giving up the ghost, potting the brown and laying a nice snooker on the blue behind the pink.

But Wilson hits it and should pot a long blue over the pocket to seal the frame - and he does. 15-11 to the 'Warrior'. Two frames from the final.

And Kyren Wilson crunches that long yellow in. Back to a snooker required. And Dave Gilbert comes to the table in a snooker, behind that blue.

I've seen some big frames at the Crucible, but not much bigger than this.

What an error from Kyren Wilson.

Dave Gilbert snookered him behind the blue - and Wilson miscues his attempted swerve, fouling the blue in the process.

Those five foul points mean Gilbert can tie with a clearance and force a re-spot.

But he's left a long yellow for Wilson...

Scottie and Shaun were chatting to me just before heading into the Crucible.

They've made the trip up from Birmingham and Devon and are hoping for a David Gilbert v Stuart Bingham final.

"I am expecting to see Dave Gilbert coming back and for this to be super-tight," says Scottie.

"Kyren is playing really well so it'll be hard for Dave. I am hoping Stuart Bingham gets to the final," adds Shaun.

If Dave had got behind the yellow that would have been shot of the championship. It was a tremendous effort.

But if he can get three reds and three blacks, he can lay an evil snooker behind the yellow.

Dave Gilbert plays a superb shot to not only free a couple of safe reds but get right in behind the yellow.

Kyren Wilson escapes the snooker but has left his opponent in with an easy red and a chance to get a few points on the board before trying to get the snooker he needs.

Do-or-die time for David Gilbert after Kyren Wilson leaves him a red.

It's not the best positional shot, leaving himself a tough brown off the cushion - and it stays agonisingly in the jaws.

The miss means Gilbert needs a snooker, 53 points behind with 51 still on. But the balls aren't badly positioned for snookers.

There were gasps of disbelief in the media room when David Gilbert took on that black. It was high-tariff stuff. But what a response to get out of that snooker.

He did too, JV. Superb escape from David Gilbert - and leaves it safe too.

Gilbert came off baulk cushion, then two side rails to nestle on the red bottom left of your picture. Amazing judgement.
