Ben Woollaston shot into the snooker spotlight with his surprise first-round win against Mark Selby at the World Championship.

World number one Judd Trump held off Shaun Murphy's fightback to win an epic last-16 tie and move into the quarter-finals of the World Championship.

Trump looked set for a routine victory when he led 12-6 but missed a red into the middle pocket and Murphy capitalised by reeling off four frames in a row.

However, 2019 champion Trump held his nerve to take the 23rd frame for a 13-10 win and set up a match against either 2023 winner Luca Brecel or 2016 runner-up Ding Junhui in the quarter-final.

On Sunday, Trump made the two century breaks he needed to reach the 100-ton mark for the season, an achievement that earned him a £100,000 bonus.

The 35-year-old could become the first player to top £2m in prize money in a single season if he wins the world title, the prize for which is £500,000.

Quarter-finalist Judd Trump speaking to BBC Two:

"Shaun was in a world of his own for four or five frames and I was a little bit worried but I had to back myself in that last frame.

"In the past I've been a bit hard on myself but I'm a lot stronger mentally and I've learned to appreciate the losses and use them as motivation.

"I'm a lot more confident this year, I'm hitting the ball a lot better. I probably have a bit more belief in myself and I feel a lot more calm.

"It's pretty much every single day [you play] now - you are looking to that next session every time. It's only going to get tougher, we're not even halfway there now.

"It was an extremely tough draw to be playing Shaun at this stage with the form he was in."

Players from eight countries have won snooker's most prestigious title and become a world champion - but China is still waiting for its first success.

Could 2025 be the year that changes?

Six of the 16 players in this year's second-round line-up were from China, with England having the next highest total with five.

Zhao Xintong is into the last eight, and could be joined by Si Jiahui.

"This has got to be the biggest year for China in terms of chances of having a world champion," said Jason Ferguson, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).

"These boys have no fear and really want it. If a Chinese player became a world champion there's no doubt that player would become a national hero."

"Frankly that's the best I've ever played at the championship and I've lost.

"I can't really criticise myself too much - I came up against the world number one, the best player on the planet who is playing really well. All I can do is praise him, he played fantastically well.

"I've come back from worse positions [than 12-6] in my career - I've had some really good comebacks especially in that arena and I kept believing in myself, one frame at a time.

"The problem is when they get to 12, your next mistake could be your last and that's how it proved."

That was a very, very high-quality match - but we expected it with those two players.

It was worthy of a final. It was like a basketball game, end to end, one break after another.

Awaiting Judd Trump in the last eight will be either Luca Brecel or Ding Junhui, who play to a finish tonight.

And given Brecel leads 12-4, needing just one frame for victory, it's very likely to be the Belgian - what a meeting that will be.

The world number one was pushed almost all the way but his fantastic form in the earlier stages of this match meant the cushion he had built ultimately proved decisive.

The basket can't take the strain, the eggs smash and Judd Trump has the formality of an easy couple of balls to finally clinch progress. All over.
