Yes, we know Daniil Medvedev thinks the dirt is “for dogs” - as he famously grumbled a few years back.

But Cameron Norrie hasn’t had a load of joy on the French Open clay either.

The British number three has never reached the fourth round here.

And his recent slump means he has not beaten a top-20 player on clay since February 2023.

That’s when he stunned Carlos Alcaraz in the Rio Open final.

Daniil Medvedev has also previously stated his dislike of early morning matches. Another factor not in his favour today - the other, of course, being the actual surface he has to compete on.

Cameron Norrie looks on course for a straightforward hold at 40-0, but has to maintain his focus until the very end after Medvedev battles back to with a point.

Still on serve at the beginning of the third set.

It was an early start for Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva today, but it was worth it. She has made it to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 win over Spain's Cristina Bucsa.

Asked on her on-court interview about how early she had to wake up this morning, the 18-year-old said: "Honestly it is very difficult.

"I'm not really happy because I don't like to wake up early.

"I had to wake up at 6.40 and then I had 35 mins to pack my bags and do everything, then 25 minutes to have breakfast, 30 minutes to come here and then I spent 11 minutes in the locker room and then we did the warm-up and went on court. So it is very well planned!"

He may be the 11th seed, and a former world number one, but this would be Daniil Medvedev's sixth first-round exit in nine French Open appearances.

It certainly would be a significant upset based on ranking, but to say the Russian is not a fan of clay is a serious understatement - and Cameron Norrie is a former world number eight.

Medvedev begins the third set in much more positive fashion than he started the second, holding serve to love.

Cameron Norrie told us in his pre-tournament news conference that he felt he had been playing as well recently as he did when he was a top-10 player.

Eyebrows were raised, I’ll be honest.

But he’s backing those words up today.

The power and depth in his forehand as he wrapped up the second set was jaw-dropping.

I didn’t hear an "Ooh la la" but Norrie deserved one.

Wow - what an incredible game that was from Norrie!

He was up against it and you could feel the tension, even the crowd sensed everything had gone up a couple of degrees, but he more than stood up to the test.

Daniil Medvedev did everything in his power, drawing on all of his experience, to try to hang on there in that last game.

Tennis fans are always alert. Ready to sniff out a shock.

So the early birds at Roland Garros have shuffled to the east end of the site to see what’s going on with Daniil Medvedev.

The lower bowl of Court Simonne Mathieu is reserved for ticket-holders, but the upper tier is open to those only with grounds passes.

Fans are now queuing to get a birds eye view up top, while others are stood in the open walkway at the back of the lower tier to catch a glimpse.

Can Cameron Norrie make his good work count here? Daniil Medvedev has shown in the last few games that he won't go quietly, despite his dip in form earlier in the set, and works hard to win the opening point.

It is crisis time for Daniil Medvedev, isn't it?

He has got to galvanise his thoughts together, he has got to really be positive, he has got to get on the front foot and try to impose his game - but he is up against a very spirited opponent in Cameron Norrie.

We are witnessing Norrie push Medvedev to feel defensive in most of these points, and that isn't where Medvedev wants to play his tennis.

He is a good defender, we always say he moves so well across the baseline, but he doesn't want to be tracking back and scrambling and running down balls.

At the moment, it feels like he is.

Cameron Norrie does brilliantly to land a drop shot which Daniil Medvedev scrambles to reach but just cant quite hook back over before a second bounce.

That was a huge point for the Briton as he looks to stay in control of this set.

He follows it up with another winner for game point... and gets the hold! Norrie had to dig deep there and that could be a massive moment. He's one game away from a two-set lead.

Unfortunately for the 11th seed - and his coaching team - that has not been the case since late in the first set.

But it has made for a fascinating spectacle...
