    .

There's a good buzz around court one as Sonay Kartal prepares to get her bid to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time under way.

Kartal was 864th in the world three years ago but is now on the cusp of breaking into the top 50.

She's looked strong so far at Wimbledon, will she keep that up against Diane Parry?

  4. 'Kartal has come out of her shell'published at 13:07 British Summer Time 4 July

British number seven on BBC Radio 5 Live

I would say that Sonay Kartal has come out of her shell a little bit more over the past year.

When I first met her, she was quite hard to get anything out of because she is like ice. She is definitely more confident in herself and in her tennis now.

The more she has been around all of us, the more her confidence is just shining on and off court. She is enjoying being at these big tournaments and exploring new places, so I think that also helps on court.

This is a real opportunity for Sonny Kartal. She was so clinical in the second round and she looks so comfortable on court. She is able to move the ball side to side with such depth and her serve has really improved.

Today is a great opportunity for her.

  6. Osaka holdspublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 4 July

    *Pavlyuchenkova 3-6 6-4 4-4 Osaka

Naomi Osaka sends a forehand long to trail 0-30 before falling to her knees and taking a moment to gather herself.

The crowd get behind her and it helps as she takes the next point.

A 14th ace of the match for Osaka gets her to 40-30 and she goes on to hold.

    We stay on serve.

Pavlyuchenkova is bringing really good stuff. She is still hitting big but is slightly missing her targets now.

This is heating up nicely. We are hearing shouts from Osaka, she sounds very positive. A strong fight from her.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is dragged into a rally and tries to go big down the line to get herself out of it. The forehand strays wide and it's back to second deuce.

Pavlyuchenkova has a breathless moment when Naomi Osaka attempts a lob and it lands just long.

But the Russian can't make full use of advantage as she slaps into the net for third deuce.

Sonay Kartal appears to be thriving at Wimbledon.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed an impressive rise in the past 12 months and by beating 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round, she secured her third win against a top-20 opponent this year.

Kartal is a recognisable presence on the court with her tattoos and distinctly retro tennis kit, and appears to be enjoying playing on the big stage.

Her path to professional tennis is not a well-trodden one, having had to largely self-fund her career, something she credits with helping her to mature very quickly.

"When I was growing up, I kind of did quite a lot of tournaments on my own just because I couldn't afford to pay a coach week in and week out," said Kartal, who has climbed around 250 places in the rankings over the past year to 51st.

"I think it was great. It helped me develop as a teenager, grow up super fast, made me much more mature, hold myself accountable to a lot of things."

Next up for Kartal is a match against French qualifier Diane Parry, who beat 12th seed and world number 15 Diana Shnaider to reach the third round.

  11. Kartal's run to third roundpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 4 July

    Parry v Kartal (13:00 BST)

It has already been an impressive run from Sonay Kartal.

The British number three caused a big upset in the first round, knocking out 20th seed and former semi-finalist Jelena Ostapenko in three sets.

Having been comfortably beaten by the ex-French Open champion in the opening round at Eastbourne last week, Kartal held her nerve to see the match over the line in the deciding set.

The Brit then needed little time to secure her spot in the third round for the second year in a row, powering past Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets for the loss of just four games.

Kartal now faces French qualifier Diane Parry as she looks for her best run at a Grand Slam in her career so far.

There’s a strong smell of sun cream in the air as the afternoon sun beats down on the All England Club.

Court two is a lovely little arena tucked away at the edge of the grounds, but it’s entirely exposed to the elements and I’m not sure I would have liked to have been sat here all day when the record-breaking heat was around earlier in the week.

Naomi Osaka was feeling the heat, but she’s using it to cook up a storm in this third set as she whacks down an ace and sets us up for a grandstand finish here.

A big game for Osaka. Every game is big for her now. You can understand why she was starting to feel negative but this at least puts pressure on Pavlyuchenkova to hold her serve.
