Another Jannik Sinner service game comes and goes without incident. Ben Shelton can hardly get a return back in play.

[To serve at Ben Shelton's speed] You've got to have a very loose wrist and an unbelievable snapping action and beautiful wrist acceleration which he certainly has.

The knee bend is amazing too, he throws everything up and after that ball.

  3. Sinner serving to stay in the first setpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 5-6 Shelton

Leading 30-15, Shelton is pegged back to 30-all as Jannik Sinner follows a big forehand into the net and nails a diagonal backhand volley.

As is his wont, Shelton drags himself out of trouble with an ace followed by a big serve out wide which Sinner can only just get a racquet on.

Shelton roars and looks to his box. Sinner is serving to stay in the set.

  4. 'Not a lot of ways Cobolli can hurt Djokovic'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli v Djokovic

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC One

Flavio Cobolli is an extremely talented player but there are not a lot of ways he can hurt his idol [Novak Djokovic], this is the biggest one of his life.

What Cobolli does really well is he uses his speed to his advantage, he has got to use that against most of the players who are a lot taller.

A few final stretches before both players walk out on to Centre Court. A few empty seats around at the moment but those should fill up fairly promptly, you'd hope.

Ben Shelton just has to play his game and take care of business on his side of the court. I think what's been lacking a little bit is his return of serve during the stats of the tournament, that's probably his weakest side.

If he can put some pressure on the second serve returns, but the first serve it's not about the speed, it's about the accuracy against Jannik Sinner.

He has to serve extremely well today because there is no better returner in the game than Sinner and if he doesn't find the spots, he's going to be in trouble.

    Did our eyes deceive us?

Ben Shelton whacks down a SECOND serve at 140mph-plus.

Sure that's what the speedo said. Either way it looked and sounded like a first serve.

The astonished murmurs all around Court One validate what I think I saw.

    Sinner 5-5 Shelton*

We're yet to have a break point in the opening set.

Jannik Sinner holds to love for the fourth time, with a couple of well-executed net approaches signalling his intent to pounce on any blocked returns.

Novak Djokovic understands the nuances of this court better than everyone. Only [Carlos] Alcaraz with his A game has figured out a way to dismantle him and show that he is human.

There's a little bit of uncertainty coming into this match with what has been going on, I don't know what is going on with his stomach. I've never seen anyone ice their stomach during the match.

Djokovic might be putting extra pressure on himself, he wants to break every record that exists, get to 25 [Grand Slams] by winning this. He is human, he is feeling something.

He has got a great-looking draw, if you had said he will play Flavio Cobolli in the quarters before the tournament, he would have signed up for that.

  9. Shelton holdspublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 4-5 Shelton

Ben Shelton's 140+ mph second serve lands somewhere between the service box and the baseline to get Jannik Sinner on the board (30-15).

A second double fault makes it 40-30 and although he wins the next point to seal the game, the American won't be able to dish out double faults with such generosity in a tie-break.

  10. 'There's no holes in his game'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli v Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has, at times, shown some of his best form during this tournament.

If he wins Wimbledon this year, he'll equal Roger Federer's tally of eight singles titles at SW19.

A 25th Grand Slam singles trophy would move him clear on his own as the most successful player, male or female, in the sport's biggest events.

  11. Sinner holdspublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sinner 4-4 Shelton*

A no-nonsense hold to love from Jannik Sinner.

He set the tone by burying a forehand off Ben Shelton's return into a wide open court. Shelton simply stood still and watched the ball whistle by.

Sinner's only lost one point on his serve.

"Let's have a 140!" shouts one fella to Shelton.

Nope, Shelton's not on the oche. He's serving in front of the speed gun.

Big Ben (that has to be his London nickname) obliges with a monster 147mph delivery.

Cue gasps. Only problem was the serve was well out.

Ben Shelton can pick any spot on the court - he can vary the speed, he can go into the body, it's a tremendous serve.

Heading into Wimbledon, Flavio Cobolli had never previously reached the second week of a Grand Slam.

The Italian, the 22nd seed, is now just three wins away from the trophy, facing a man playing in his 63rd Grand Slam quarter-final: Novak Djokovic.

Cobolli came through his first three matches without dropping a set before overcoming former finalist Marin Cilic in four sets in the last 16.

Seven-time champion Djokovic, the sixth seed, came from a set down to defeat 11th seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round, having previously beaten Alexandre Muller, Dan Evans and Miomir Kecmanovic.

In their only previous meeting on the ATP Tour, Djokovic won 6-1 6-2 at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.

  15. Shelton holdspublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 3-4 Shelton

Ben Shelton comes through his first test.

He serves up a big ace for advantage before coming into the net to seal the hold.

Shelton's dad, smiling in the stands, was happy with that point.

  17. Deucepublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sinner 3-3 Shelton*

That's entertainment! Jannik Sinner, at full stretch at the net, pulls off an unlikely return and Ben Shelton, ever the showman, goes for the tweener.

He could probably have run around for a conventional stroke - and maybe he should have with Sinner burying the winner - but what fun!

Sinner levels the game at 30-all as his excellent net play forces Shelton into a wild lob and the Italian earns deuce with a backhand down the line.

  18. Sinner's serve stepped back uppublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 9 July

    Jonathan Jurejko
BBC Sport senior tennis reporter at Wimbledon

After Sinner's last-16 match, his coach Darren Cahill spoke about how the elbow issue hampered the speed of the top seed's serve.

Cahill was right. Sinner's average first-serve speed dropped to 122.9mph against Grigor Dimitrov, having been 126.9, 124.8 and 125.1 in his opening three matches.

Today he's back up to 125.3 in his three service games so far.

  19. Djokovic next on Centre Courtpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli v Djokovic

There will be a wait of about 20 minutes until Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli walk on to Centre Court for their Wimbledon quarter-final.

We'll build up to that match alongside our updates on the match between Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton.

  20. 'A dream come true'published at 15:56 British Summer Time 9 July

    Andreeva 6-7 (3-7) 6-7 (2-7) Bencic

Belinda Bencic speaking after beating Mirra Andreeva to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final: "Mirra Andreeva was really tough, I have a lot of respect for her. She is 18 and performing on the biggest stages, already winning so many amazing tournaments. I studied all evening yesterday to come up with a plan. I think it worked out well. With two tie-breaks it is not easy, it's just a small edge. I am so happy to play on Centre Court. It is just my third time and it is so magical so thank you very much."

On the edge in the match: "When the match is so tight, you are not thinking and your body is functioning and your instincts kick in so I'm really happy I won today."

On her foot injury: "It's my toenail, they always crack. It is the life of a tennis player! I didn't want to take a medical time out so you don't have to see this."

On reaching Wimbledon semi-final for the first time: "It's crazy, it's unbelievable. It's a dream come true. I tried not to think about it at the match point. I'm just speechless. It is my second Grand Slam semi-final overall and my first at Wimbledon. Just speechless, so happy."

On returning to the top 20 after returning from maternity leave: "I'm very proud. I didn't say it to myself much before but since having Bella [her daughter] I say it to myself every day. It's not only me, I wouldn't be able to do it without my amazing family and team. We worked so hard on the comeback. We are enjoying life on tour and to play great is a bonus. I'm generally just really happy to be able to play again. because my body allows it."
