Summary

  1. Cobolli holdspublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli 2-2 Djokovic*

From 40-0 up, Flavio Cobolli is pegged back to a couple of deuces by Novak Djokovic.

A service hold that was more difficult than it perhaps should have been, but no lasting harm done at this stage.

As the match wears on though, you feel Cobolli will need to limit the number of games like that where he's used up valuable physical and mental energy to get over the line.

  2. Shelton holdspublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 1-1 Shelton

Ben Shelton's serve is such a weapon but it's just too hit and miss.

A big ace sends Jannik Sinner sprawling for 15-0 but the Italian climbs into his second serves and as soon as he gets a foothold in the rally, the point is his.

Shelton recovers from 15-30 to hold, finishing the game with back-to-back aces.

Cobolli has constantly looked to his coaching box for reassurance throughout the match so far.

His father Stefano, a former tennis player himself who played in the Wimbledon qualifiers in 2004, is his coach.

It's a tough ask for the Italian, this, but he said he wants to enjoy every point and it looks like he's doing that so far, raising a fist at every point won and twizzling his racquet as he waits to receive at the baseline - a bit of a trademark move.

  5. Sinner holdspublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 1-0 Shelton*

Jannik Sinner saves the break points in clinical fashion, both times attacking Ben Shelton's weak returns with strong forehand strokes.

An ace brings advantage. A big serve down the T seals the game.

    Panic? What panic?

  6. Djokovic holdspublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli 1-2 Djokovic*

Flavio Cobolli had a promising football career as a youngster, spending time in Roma's academy before concentrating on tennis. BBC Sport's Jess Anderson has written about that in this piece.

He puts Novak Djokovic under a little bit of pressure on serve, getting to 0-15 and 15-30, but the seven-time Wimbledon champion escapes.

  7. Break point Sheltonpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 9 July

Sinner's ice has cooled Shelton's heat.

The Italian top seed remains composed, as he almost always does, to execute his groundstrokes to pure perfection.

That forces Shelton into upping the ante with his returns, which increases the margin of error and brings the mistakes.

Judging by the anguished sounds drowning out the jubilant cheers, the American is the crowd favourite here.

  9. Cobolli holdspublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 9 July

    Cobolli 1-1 Djokovic*

The BBC TV coverage shows a statistic on screen that Flavio Cobolli and Novak Djokovic are ranked first and second for the best "steal score" in this tournament - a metric that covers points won from defensive positions.

Cobolli recovers from 0-30 down to get himself on the scoreboard.

That's what Jannik Sinner does, he forces you to go for these big shots because they keep coming back and it then creates the errors.

  11. Game and first set - Sinnerpublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 0-0 Shelton

Ben Shelton misses his mark with a deep forehand for the third point in a row to give Jannik Sinner four set points.

    He only needs one.

  12. Djokovic holdspublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Cobolli 0-1 Djokovic

A comfortable enough service hold for the veteran Serb to start things off.

  13. Tie-breakpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sinner 6-6 (5-2) Shelton*

Ben Shelton's forehand flies long and Jannik Sinner pumps his fist as he heads to his bench.

Another forehand goes just long. Sinner has a three-point cushion.

    Cobolli 0-0 Djokovic*

    Jess Anderson
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Flavio Cobolli has made absolutely no secret of his admiration for Novak Djokovic.

The Italian 22nd seed said he watches videos of the 24-time major winner every day.

He's going to have to put that firmly out of his mind this afternoon.

  16. Tie-breakpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 9 July

    *Sinner 6-6 (3-2) Shelton

Jannik Sinner capitalises on a slow second serve to get on the front foot in a baseline battle and Ben Shelton can only net a return from the back corner of the court.

An untimely double fault puts Sinner's nose in front.

    Cobolli v Djokovic

Flavio Cobolli had never been beyond round three of a Grand Slam before this week. He'd only just turned three years old when Novak Djokovic made his Wimbledon singles debut in 2005.

Now they meet in a Wimbledon quarter-final on Centre Court.

Sixth seed Djokovic will serve first.

  18. Tie-breakpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sinner 6-6 (1-2) Shelton*

It's advantage Ben Shelton. A sliced forehand drop shot drags Jannik Sinner out of position and the American keeps his cool to bury the winner into a near-empty court for a mini-break.

Sinner nails a backhand winner down the line to limit the damage.

If this is Jannik Sinner not 100%, then Ben Shelton will be glad he isn't fully fit.

Sinner is serving superbly at the moment. Guess how many receiving points Shelton has won? One!
