A loud ovation for Sonay Kartal and Coco Gauff as they walk out on to Court One, although with the headphones on the American might be largely oblivious to it.

It just seems as if Carlos Alcaraz has got that extra gear in the locker.

He turned it up at the end of the fourth set and he is running away with it in the fifth.

Carlos Alcaraz is closing in now.

He holds to 15. Does Frances Tiafoe have enough left in the tank to at least put some doubt in the mind of his young opponent?

Kartal's 'dream' Wimbledon run goes on

Sonay Kartal is appearing at Wimbledon for the third time and has already far surpassed her previous performances at SW19.

Kartal, who is yet to feature at any of the other three Grand Slams, suffered a first round exit at the All England Club in 2022 and 2023.

The 22-year-old Londoner had never won a match on the WTA Tour before shocking an opponent ranked 267 places higher - 29th seed Sorana Cirstea - in round one.

Kartal came from a set to to beat the Romanian 3-6 6-2 6-0.

She backed up that victory with a 6-3 5-7 6-3 win against France's Clara Burel in round two.

Nothing to lose when you are 4-1 down in the fifth.

I feel like the wind has gone from his sails.

American Coco Gauff has been a regular challenger at the other three Grand Slam events - winning the US Open in 2023, reaching the final of the French Open in 2022 and going as far as the semi-finals at the Australian Open this year.

But staking a claim at Wimbledon has proved difficult since making her debut in 2019.

The second seed has never gone deeper than round four and exited in the opening round last year.

Something feels a little different this year, though, with Gauff looking imperious during her two matches.

Gauff, 20, brushed aside compatriot Caroline Dolehide 6-1 6-2 in round one and then she cruised to a 6-2 6-1 victory against Belgium's Anca Alexia Todoni.

    *Alcaraz 5-7 6-2 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 4-1 Tiafoe

Is the intensity of this match finally catching up with Frances Tiafoe?

He double faults to make it 15-30 and then slams a forehand into the net to give Carlos Alcaraz two more break points.

Brilliant! A marvellous drop shot secures the double break and the 2023 champion is two games away from the next round.

Sonay Kartal and Coco Gauff make their way out on to the grass on Court One.

What a moment this is for the Londoner.

Kartal, who had to come through qualification to secure a spot in the main draw, looks up and around at the stands and takes it all in.

She is two years older than 20-year-old Gauff but the difference in terms of top-level experience is vast.

How will the world 298 fare against the 2023 US Open champion?

More than three and a half hours into this titanic tussle and for the first time since breaking in the first, Carlos Alcaraz is ahead in the match.

A wild forehand at 40-15 gives Frances Tiafoe a glimmer of hope but the defending champion holds to consolidate the break.

Briton Sonay Kartal, the world number 298, faces second seed Coco Gauff in the final match on Court One.

Kartal, 22, is slowly making a name for herself.

Her development was checked by injuries before "a scary few months at the start of the year" with health issues. She did not expect to be well enough to play at Wimbledon this year and says coming through qualifying was "the best thing for me".

Kartal told BBC Sport she had "spent my whole life kind of under the radar a little bit".

Today, she steps into the Court One spotlight to play American Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion.

"I think it's what dreams are made of," said Kartal. "I came here as a little kid, when I was six or seven, watching matches. I've got pictures in my house of me and my family on Centre Court, watching Roger Federer and things like that.

"I'll play my game and play my strengths and we'll see what the outcome is on Friday."

Great defensive skills from Carlos Alcaraz on the slide.

    Brilliant game from Alcaraz.

Frances Tiafoe will be a little bit disappointed.

Carlos Alcaraz does brilliantly to get the ball back on the slide and Frances Tiafoe sends his return long.

Two break points for Alcaraz... and he only needs one!

Big misjudgement from Tiafoe as he chooses to leave a backhand from his Spanish opponent, expecting it to go long.

It doesn't and the defending champion has the advantage in the deciding set.
