Watching how the players warm up at Aorangi Park is also good fun.

I’m particularly enjoying watching 2021 men’s finalist Matteo Berrettini doing football keepie-uppies with his a member of his team.

Good touch for a big man.

The Italians could have done with them at the Euros…

Elena Rybakina always gives off an air that everything is fine and it's all part of the plan.

I'm certain there is other things going on inside but it's certainly that image that she portrays.

Rybakina reads the game very well. She does have very good feel which might not be expected due to her height.

Success is about maximising your potential and if you had said to Andy when he was starting out just win a grand slam – that’s incredibly difficult to do. I certainly didn’t do it and not many people do.

So when you reflect on 45 plus titles on the tour, three grand slams, two Olympic golds, the Davis Cup, world number one, he can look back and reflect on an incredible career.

    Rybakina 1-2 Ruse*

After the previous game last almost 10 minutes, Elena Rybakina makes sure this one is far shorter.

The fourth seed holds to love and is up and running in this match.

    *Rybakina 0-2 Ruse

    Johanna Konta

Elena-Gabriela Ruse will want to capitalise on her good start.

I do think a competitive game like this early on in the match gets players loosened up.

  9. Ruse holds... justpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 2 July

    *Rybakina 0-2 Ruse

Elena-Gabriela Ruse holds but it wasn't straightforward!

She quickly went up 40-0 but a double fault let Elena Rybakina back in.

A further three double faults in the game allow the former champion a couple of break points but Ruse digs in and a wild shot from Rybakina gives the Romanian the hold.

Marketa Vondrousova returns to Centre Court a year on from her unlikely triumph at SW19.

The 25-year-old Czech was unseeded in 2023 but comes in as the sixth seed this time around and will have to deal with far more attention as defending champion.

Vondrousova is one of a number of players arriving after injury scares and had to retire during her only warm-up event in Berlin because of a hip injury.

Hoping to capitalise if Vondrousova is still suffering any ill effects is 21-year-old Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

She has moved into the top 100 this year but this will be just her second match at Wimbledon following a first-round loss last year.

He’s certainly raised the bar. I think that’s where he has been so influential and it’s been so important to be that role model for all the younger players in both the men’s and the women’s.

Records are there to be broken and you look at the 12 Brits playing today and so many more in the draw and in qualifying, I think British tennis is in very good shape and I think a large part of that is to do with Andy Murray.

  15. Ruse breakspublished at 13:13 British Summer Time 2 July

    Rybakina 0-1 Ruse*

What a start for Elena-Gabriela Ruse!

The Romanian starts with a superb backhand winner down the line and after Elena Rybakina twice finds the net, Ruse suddenly has three break points.

After hitting a forehand just wide with the first, Ruse gets the second when Rybakina goes long.

  16. 'Rybakina high up the list for the Championships'published at 13:11 British Summer Time 2 July

    Rybakina 0-0 Ruse*

    Johanna Konta

Elena Rybakina is always going to be in the mix [for the title]. Her game style, her past achievements here [winning Wimbledon], she is one of the names you would put forward to be one of the names for the Championships.

I agree, with [Aryna] Sabalenka no longer in the draw, it does put her that much higher on the list.

Andy Murray has been just the most incredible flag-bearer for British tennis, and so much more than that. I think he’s contributed massively to the global game.

He’s been playing and competing in an incredible era against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic – three of the greatest players of all time – and when you see how he’s matched up against them, he’s beaten them, he’s finished as the world number one in that era, he’s won three grand slams, two Olympic golds, he goes way beyond tennis.

In terms of British sport he’s one of our greatest athletes and I’m sure he’s going to be missed by many fans around the world.

    Rybakina v Ruse

Elena Rybakina has had an up-and-down 2024 so far with a number of health or fitness issues, including having to retire with abdominal pain in the first set of her second round match in Berlin recently.

However, the 25-year-old Kazakhstani has also won titles in Brisbane, Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart so will be confident of going deep in the tournament and reclaiming the title she won in 2022.

The fourth seed is up against qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who is looking to making it past the first round at the All England Club for the first time, at the fourth attempt.

The Romanian arrived in good form after breezing through qualifying without dropping a set. But it will be an entirely different challenge against the former champion on Court One.
