Jannik Sinner advances to the second round, where he will meet former Wimbledon finalist and compatriot Matteo Berrettini:

“I’m very happy to be in the second round. I want to thank everyone for the support. It’s amazing.

"He played really well, he was serving well, I missed a couple of shots. First round matches are never easy and to the next round I have to raise my level.

"I have a day off and then I need to get my rhythm."

Did he lose confidence in his footwork?

"This is a grass court and you cannot control everything. It can be difficult to recover. I ended the match in a very positive way and hopefully it can help me in the next round."

First tournament as a world number one:

"First of all it’s a huge privilege and honour to be in that position, and there's no better place to play as a world number one.

"It’s an amazing feeling but every match starts with 0-0 and every opponent wants to win, as I do. All matches are a very high level, which all of you want to see."

Thoughts on playing Matteo Berrettini next:

"Tough match that’s for sure. He played the final here, he knows very well how to play on this surface. Every day is different and let’s see what’s coming."

  5. No Murray decision tonightpublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 1 July

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Waiting for an update on Andy Murray? We won't get one until tomorrow morning.

Murray said earlier today he would make a decision tonight about whether he will play in the singles tomorrow.

We won't hear what he has decided to do until hours before his scheduled match against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.

The pair are set to be third on Centre Court, meaning they would play about 18:00 BST.

One of the many things we have learned about Murray over the years is he takes his time to make a decision.

Therefore, it is no surprise the two-time Wimbledon champion is waiting as long as possible over what could be his final singles match at the place where he has enjoyed some of the finest moments of his career.

Spain's Paula Badosa suffered a straight set defeat against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic when the pair squared off at Wimbledon in 2021.

But the shoe was on the other foot this evening as world number 93 Badosa sealed her spot in round two.

Badosa has never made it further than round four at Wimbledon, doing so in 2021 and 2022, while she suffered a second round exit last year.

    Sinner 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3 Hanfmann

The top seed is safely through to round two.

A couple of aces from Jannik Sinner help him bring up two match points, the first goes begging but he thumps a backhand into the corner to get the second.

Yannick Hanfmann more than played his part in this one, taking a set off the Australian Open champion and generally making life difficult for him.

But Sinner came through and looked much more like himself in the fourth set. Job done for the world number one.

An ace down the middle from Yannick Hanfmann secures a hold to 15 and so it's over to Jannik Sinner to serve for the match.

Sinner might not have needed to do so but didn't challenge a second serve ace from Hanfmann that was shown to be just out.

It's all over on Court Two with 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu making easy work of Romania's Jaqueline Cristian.

Andreescu, ranked 176th, started with intent, breaking world number 62 Cristian in the opening game and she never looked back.

The Canadian, who has never been beyond the third round at Wimbledon, meets Czech Linda Noskova in round two.

  13. Sinner a game awaypublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 1 July

    Sinner 6-3 6-4 3-6 5-2 Hanfmann*

A misjudged drop shot from Yannick Hanfmann allows Jannik Sinner the chance to show him how it's done.

That sets the Italian on his way to another comfortable hold and he brings out a bit of serve-and-volley action to finish it off.

Hanfmann will serve to stay in the match.

    *Sinner 6-3 6-4 3-6 4-2 Hanfmann

Jannik Sinner looks to be in a hurry but Yannick Hanfmann is not just going to roll over.

The 6ft4in German keeps chipping away and when laser-like forehand from Sinner goes just long, Hanfmann is up 40-15 and able to close out the game.

  15. 12th seed Tommy Paul throughpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 1 July

    Paul 6-2 6-1 4-6 6-3 Martinez

The American 12th seed Tommy Paul has made his way through to the next round.

Paul, 27, won Queen's a few weeks ago and will be hoping to go some way into the competition.

Today wasn't a total breeze though, Spaniard Pedro Martinez did snatch the third set off him.

The world number 13 will play the Finish world number 147 Otto Virtanen next.

    Break consolidated with ease.

A hold to love for Jannik Sinner and after a disjointed performance in the first three sets, he's starting to put it together in the fourth.

Round two is in sight for the 22-year-old top seed.

The pressure tells for Jannik Sinner!

He's stepped it up and for all that Yannick Hanfmann tried to withstand it, firing down three aces at deuce, he can't keep the world number one out.

The break seems to have worked for Sinner. He looks more energised than at any stage of this match.

Game, set and match - Kartalpublished at 20:11 British Summer Time 1 July

    Cirstea 6-3 2-6 0-6 Kartal

Well that's remarkable tennis from British qualifier Sonay Kartal.

A gutsy winner down the line means she wins this final set 6-0 and is through to the second round.

She had previously feared she would have to sit out the whole of 2024 because of serious health issues.

"I won't go into the detail but I didn't think I'd be on tour this year," she said.

Having only played two tournaments between September and April, she had to make it through qualifying, despite wildcards for the last two years.

She will be ecstatic after today's performance.

    Sinner 6-3 6-4 3-6 2-1 Hanfmann*

Jannik Sinner leaps to hammer an emphatic volley past Yannick Hanfmann and keep it on serve in this fourth set.

The Italian seems to have upped the ante a bit after losing that third set.

It might just be roof being closed but it even sounds like he's hitting the ball that much harder now.

  20. Gauff keeping good companypublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 1 July

    Dolehide 1-6 2-6 Gauff

That emphatic win means Coco Gauff, aged 20, is the first player under 21 to win each of their first 17 matches in consecutive seasons against opponents outside the WTA's top 50 - Caroline Dolehide is ranked number 51 - since Serena Williams.
