Emma Raducanu, who advances into the second round:

On being back on Centre Court winning: “It was an incredibly difficult match. I’ve barely played a defender who’s landed the ball on the baseline and it took a lot of strength to get the ball back.

“It’s not easy for her - you’re not playing in the morning and suddenly you’re on Centre Court. Thanks to everyone for getting me over the line.”

When did she know she was not playing Ekaterina Alexandrova?

“I found out at 10:30 today and for the last three days we were playing with similar opponents. It took a little bit of adjusting to find my feet.

“Thank you for the suport in crucial moments. I really enjoyed being back here.”

On the surgeries - what it means to win again at Wimbledon: “I’m incredibly happy to be back here. I was nervous, I’m sure everyone could see that in my tennis.

"Honestly watching the football last night it was winning ugly - it all counts.

"I think it’s such a buzz in the summer time. I think the tennis, football, F1, it uplifts everyone, myself included and my motivation is to keep coming back here, keep playing and feel that buzz.”

  2. 'Good match for Raducanu to come through in straight sets'published at 18:37 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-6 Raducanu

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Raducanu has to generate all of the power today because Zarazua was tricky, she was slicing, there were shots with zero pace at all.

It just makes you think about your own game a bit more so if you're nervous and not hitting freely anyway then it is already tough.

It was a really good match for her to come through in straight sets.

A win is a win, that's really the most important thing at the moment.

  3. Lucky loser heading homepublished at 18:33 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-6 Raducanu

And a word for Renata Zarazua too.

The Mexican, a lucky loser, only found out this morning that she would be making her Wimbledon and Centre Court debut against Emma Raducanu after Ekaterina Alexandrova withdrew due to illness.

Zarazua comes out of that defeat with a lot of credit and possibly a few new fans with her drop shots, in particular, something to behold.

Brilliant from Yuriko Lily Miyazaki as she follows Emma Raducanu in booking her spot in the second round.

It was a stunning display from the Brit and the court 16 crowd showed their appreciation throughout.

  6. 'Fantastic way to get Raducanu's tournament under way'published at 18:30 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-6 Raducanu

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

There was a sigh of relief from Raducanu.

The whole situation was difficult, suddenly you're the favourite to win when before you were the underdog. She just had to deal with a lot over the last few hours.

Zarazua didn't make it easy at all, an hour and 56 minutes on the clock and really not much in it.

For Raducanu to get the win in straight sets, get her tournament under way, that was a fantastic way to close it out as well.

  7. Raducanu into round twopublished at 18:29 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-6 Raducanu

The first set may have looked a bit rusty and a little scrappy at times for Emma Raducanu, but that's what first-round matches are for, right? A chance to get those mistakes out of the way early and an opportunity to find your rhythm.

Something clicked from the tie-break at the end of the first set, with Raducanu rattling off seven points to get over the line before she made easier work of the second set.

There's always a lot of expectation around Raducanu after the US Open triumph in 2021 but she's still only 21!

  8. Sinner breaks in second setpublished at 18:29 1 July

    *Sinner 6-3 2-1 Hanfmann

Jannik Sinner is starting to take control of this match.

For all the hard work we've seen from Yannick Hanfmann, the German just can't match the world number one.

After a number of powerful ground strokes, Sinner seals the game - and the first break of the second set - with a fierce cross-court forehand.

  9. Game, set and match - Raducanupublished at 18:24 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-6 Raducanu

WOW! A battle of the drop shots is eventually won by Emma Raducanu.

It's beautiful from Raducanu to cut it across court and out of Renata Zarazua's reach.

The Brit has raced through this service game and has three attempts at match point.

Raducanu does it! She takes the final game to love.

    Van de Zandschulp 6-2 4-6 6-3 6-2 Broady

    Emily Salley

Another Brit bites the dust in the first round.

Liam Broady will not be enjoying a run to the third round like he has done in the past two years.

Botic van de Zandschulp wraps up a 6-2 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory as Broady goes long.

  11. Broady out after four-set defeatpublished at 18:22 1 July

    Van de Zandschulp 6-2 4-3 6-3 6-2 Broady

That's it for Stockport-born Liam Broady and the men's singles.

He's not really looked like himself with the Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp looking very sharp and clinical.

That said, it's worth remembering Broady's had a few injuries this year including a bizarre accident that saw him hit his head on his car boot.

Van de Zandschulp will play Frenchman Ugo Humbert next.

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-5 Raducanu*

    Johanna Konta
Former British number one on BBC TV

I think it is about how many of these rallies they have been having. It has been quite consistent through the match, We have seen a lot of these.

Both players are doing a really good job about hanging tough and not giving in.

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 3-5 Raducanu*

Renata Zarazua will not back down and a gruelling 19-shot rally eventually ends with Emma Raducanu firing into the net - advantage for Zarazua.

Raducanu gets it back to deuce for a third time as this game goes into its eighth minute.

Eventually Zarazua goes on to hold.

It's over to Raducanu to serve for the match.

  16. Postpublished at 18:18 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 2-5 Raducanu*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Zarazua does not hold back! She just seems to play with a real freedom and she backs herself.

Some of her shots are really close to that baseline.

  17. Deucepublished at 18:18 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 2-5 Raducanu*

Reanata Zarazua faults on first serve and then comes out on top after a long rally to get to deuce.

Where do we go from here?

Advantage Zarazua is the answer with the Mexican pulling off a fine cross-court drop shot.

But it's back to deuce with Zarazua unable to return from the baseline.

  18. Game and first set - Sinnerpublished at 18:16 1 July

    Sinner 6-3 Hanfmann*

Yannick Hanfmann holds to love but Jannik Sinner has no trouble serving out the set.

The top seed starts the game with a blistering forehand winner and doesn't look back.

Hanfmann's forehand goes tamely into the net and that is the first set for Sinner.

  20. Match point for Raducanupublished at 18:15 1 July

    Zarazua 6-7 (0-7) 2-5 Raducanu*

Renata Zarazua is serving to stay in this match and she pulls off an audacious drop shot to move 15-0 in front.

She has been executing them so well all match and, if she does exit in the first round, I'll miss watching those as this tournament progresses.

Raducanu falls 30-0 behind but fights back to level as she consistently puts Zarazua in awkward situations.

The 2021 US Open champion has match point!
