Everton teenager Harrison Armstrong is set to head out on loan to Championship strugglers Derby County.

The 18-year-old has broken into the Toffees first team this season, making six appearances, including an impressive showing in the FA Cup third round victory over Peterborough.

Everton sources feel a loan move for Armstrong will provide some valuable first-team experience for the England youth international.

Liverpool forward Jayden Danns looks set to join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old is likely to join the promotion-chasing Championship side for more first-team experience but, before doing so, he is expected to sign a new long-term deal on improved terms with Liverpool.

Danns, who has been with the Reds since he was eight years old, made his first-team debut last season when they beat Luton Town in a Premier League game under Jurgen Klopp in February 2024.

He helped Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final a few days later and then scored his first goals for the club in an FA Cup win against Southampton.

Danns made his Champions League debut in defeat at PSV Eindhoven last week. He started the group stage game with Liverpool already through to the last 16.

  3. Alcaraz 'could be an astute signing' published at 15:50 3 February

Southampton fan and podcaster Tom Parker says Carlos Alcaraz is "a talented footballer" and backed the Argentine midfielder to get a few goals for Everton if a deal is completed on deadline day.

Parker joined BBC Radio Merseyside to discuss the 22-year-old, who looks poised to move on loan to Goodison Park from Brazilian side Flamengo.

Two years ago, it was Southampton who signed Alcaraz and he made an instant impact at St Mary's Stadium, scoring four goals in the 18 Premier League games he played that season.

"He was the only bright light of that season - he scored goals, looked creative and full of energy," said Parker. "A young player that can do interesting and exciting things operating in between midfield and attack."

However, despite that fine start, he only scored twice in the Championship for Southampton and spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Juventus.

"The challenge with him is he's inconsistent - someone like Moyes with all that experience will be looking to get the best of him," said Parker. "He's only young but he's on his fourth or fifth club now and a bit of stability and consistency could do him good.

"It's no risk - he can come and do a really good job. He's coming in to a positive time at the club with a good manager and an exciting crop of players.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up with half a dozen goals at the end of the season - he's a talented footballer.

"Everton could be getting a very astute signing, or they could be getting someone who's a bit of a footnote."

  4. Just the one signing expected at Everton?published at 15:14 3 February

Not anticipating any issues with Everton's loan signing of Carlos Alcaraz from Flamengo, but the Argentine may well be the only arrival of the transfer window.

Club sources have indicated that there are no strikers available at the right price in the current market that can come in and improve the team immediately.

The Friedkin Group have come in as the new owners and the Profit and Sustainability situation has improved, but money is going to be spent wisely rather than for the sake of doing so.

Beto scored twice in the 4-0 thrashing of Leicester on Saturday but there seems to be positive news on the injury front, with the on-loan Armando Broja expected to be back in action in four to five weeks from an ankle injury, rather than the 12 weeks that was initially expected.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be back from a hamstring issue before the end of the season, while Youssef Chermiti could also be back from a thigh injury in the next three to four weeks.

We are still waiting for Everton to complete the signing of midfielder Carlos Alcaraz on loan from Flamengo, with an agreement being reached between the clubs on Friday.

Sources close to the player had told he was scheduled to fly in and have a medical on Merseyside on Sunday, but we have not have official confirmation of the deal going through.

It remains to be seen what business the Toffees do after that. Manager David Moyes has made no secret about wanting to bring players in, especially a striker.

But who is available out there who can come in and do a job immediately for Everton?

It feels like we are waiting for one domino to drop somewhere, which could trigger moves in the rest of the chain.

    Time is ticking, though.

The main action taking place at Liverpool on deadline day is concerning their younger players and the club weighing up whether to keep them at Anfield or send them out on loan for experience.

It seems likely that Reds forward Jayden Danns, 19, will be allowed to go out on loan to Sunderland, while winger Kaide Gordon, 20, will join Portsmouth until the end of the season.

Liverpool's 20-year-old midfielder James McConnell, who impressed manager Arne Slot in a Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven last week, will be staying put.

Everton manager David Moyes will be seeking attacking reinforcements as the deadline approaches, despite a stunning return to the club with three wins in his first four games.

Beto scored twice in the 4-0 win over Leicester City, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja, on loan from Chelsea, are long-term absentees.

The problem Moyes faces is a shortage of realistic candidates and a shortage of big money to acquire them.

Might be a day spent on, or by, the telephone for the manager and director of football Kevin Thelwell.

  8. Title race will be 'closer than you think' - Walcottpublished at 08:32 3 February

After impressive wins for Liverpool and Arsenal at the weekend, former England internationals Theo Walcott and Danny Murphy discussed how they think the Premier League title race will unfold.

Walcott: "Arsenal had to win [against Manchester City on Sunday] and put in a statement performance.

"Liverpool are, at this moment, playing at some level.

"It's going to be closer than you think but Liverpool, at this moment, I just don't see them slipping up. That's why it was really important for Arsenal to play that level."

Murphy: "Arsenal showed in the second half of last season that they're capable of going on a great run.

"The game in hand that Liverpool have got [against an in-form Everton at Goodison Park] - a few weeks ago it seemed like a gimme. But now it's not going to be a walk in the park."

  9. What do you want on deadline day?published at 07:34 3 February

We asked you what would ensure you are satisfied this deadline day.

Here are some of your comments:

Ross: We have the best squad in Europe so we don't need to add anyone. It is time to accept Trent Alexander-Arnold will go, but if we can keep Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, then I think most of us will be pleased.

David: We are looking very good and I don't see how we don't win the title and at least one of the cups. But we need to strengthen. We are in need of cover at centre-half, definitely a new left-back and, if Alexander-Arnold leaves then we need a right-back to cover Conor Bradley.

Ian: I don't think we need anyone this month, but we need a right and left full-back in the summer and a top-notch number nine to replace Darwin Nunez. Just no January panic buying please. Let Andy Carroll be your warning!

Peter: Nothing is required - except to sort out the three contracts, of course!

Russ: Liverpool have an outstanding forward line and midfield, but the defence is -and has been for some time - fragile. If Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold leave, then what? It is obvious we need to prepare for the future. As Alan Hansen said: "You'll win nothing with kids."

We asked you what would ensure you are satisfied this deadline day.

Here are some of your comments:

Tommo: We don't want panic buys that are not good players, but would take a couple of quality loans and then rebuild in the summer.

Symon: A striker is a must! I presume Armando Broja and Orel Mangala are going back to their home clubs, so let's get some hungry young players that we can utilise and who can add to the goal tally! Iliman Ndiaye cannot keep us up single handedly.

David: With the current injury situation, and even with three wins in a row, we must bring in a goalscorer to support Beto, who is our only striker at the moment. Apart from that, we have enough cover in the rest of the squad to take us through to the new season where David Moyes can reset and our expectations can be higher than just survival.

Craige: It has got to be a centre-forward, a versatile winger that can play full-back and as a winger, and then a midfield playmaker. A major rebuild can happen in the summer as the players under 24 years old so have resale value.

Steven: We need a striker that will score on a regular basis and a creative midfielder. We need to kick on after a great few weeks.

Joe: We should sign Marcus Edwards and Felix Nmecha.

  12. Analysis: Everton 4-1 Leicester Citypublished at 17:17 2 February

The final scoreline was an emphatic one, and Everton powered away from Leicester in the second half but how the Foxes faded will worry manager Amandine Miquel.

Kelly Gago's early opener had rocked Leicester back but they responded well, and after Shannon O'Brien's smart finish they matched Everton for much of the first half.

But all three Everton goals after the game resumed betrayed a lack of concentration by Miquel's side, with Toni Payne finding plenty of space to cross to Katja Snoeijs in the penalty area for Everton's second.

Their third may have come from a training ground corner exercise, but Hanaka Hayashi was allowed too much time and space outside the area before shooting home just inside the post.

Payne drove down the left to cross to Gago for the fourth, and with Leicester wilting in the closing stages, Everton could have increased their winning margin.

There is still plenty of time left in the season for things to change, but Everton should remain comfortably in mid-table while Leicester, just three points and one place above Crystal Palace, remain deep in trouble.

  13. Win at Bournemouth 'a big hurdle cleared'published at 16:32 2 February

Sometimes you just get a sense during the season that you are watching a special team, and I cannot be the only one who felt that wutg Liverpool's win at Bournemouth.

There were lots of elements of their performance that were eye-catching.

Mohamed Salah's genius, Alisson's sharpness, the confidence, the control, the hunger... Of course, there were moments of concern for Liverpool in the game, but that is because they were facing a team stacked with self-belief.

This is a big hurdle cleared in their pursuit of the title.

It is also mightily impressive that Liverpool look indestructible when the future of three of their most important players is so uncertain. Some teams would not cope with that.

Salah's majestic moment is only going to create more headlines, but I am not sure anything is going to distract them this season.

In its goodbye season, atmospheric Goodison Park had its faithful singing from their seats. The support rolled around the stands with David Moyes paying credit to the fans.

While Everton lost key attacking players this week - all the more noteworthy as a season where they have been criticised for a lack of goals - to have two within six minutes and four by the end had fans in dreamland.

Beto told me afterwards the win was for those injured players. For him though, it will feel so important that he took his moments to show Moyes what he can do.

Moyes admitted to me afterwards he is still getting to know him and that Beto has probably found things difficult. However, Moyes is getting a tune out of the team and a fresh pair of eyes on this squad has opened up new opportunities for certain players.

There is more emphasis on attack and Saturday showed an ease to their play.

Everton fans will be hoping this carries on.

  15. 'Stay humble' - Salah's message to thriving Liverpoolpublished at 15:40 2 February

    Mo SalahImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah said Liverpool's title challenge "feels different" to previous seasons but they have to remain focused on the games ahead.

The Reds have a nine-point lead over second placed Arsenal, who host Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, having claimed their 17th victory of the season against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool were top of the table this time last season but fell away in their final eight games to finish third.

"Yeah, I think [it feels] slightly different but last season we were also very close," Salah said. "As I've said before, we need to stay humble and just take it each game at a time.

"Focus on each game. We don't have to think further.

Salah, who is out of contract in the summer, has now hit scored 20 Premier League goals or more in five of his eight campaigns at Anfield.

"Scoring goals and the team winning is an incredible feeling," he added.

"I've said it many times before that my main target this season is to win the Premier League with the team. We are going in the right direction so hopefully we can keep going like this."
