    Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled plans to recruit 5,000 new engineers over the next year and says it hopes a new app will help identify new talent and help address the global skills gap, external.

    The company has teamed-up with virtual band Gorillaz to issue a code-breaking challenge to test future engineering talent, with successful game players fast-tracked through the company's recruitment process.

    JLR needs to recruit 5,000 people this year and more than 1,000 of them will be electronics and software engineers.

    A leading figure at Birmingham's main mosque says Muslims in the West Midlands feel "under siege".

    Speaking after last night's terror attack in London, the chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque said security had been stepped up at the site in recent weeks.

    A councillor has been suspended from his cabinet position over a tweet about Grenfell Tower protesters.

    Solihull Council said an investigation would take place into the post by Conservative councillor Ken Hawkins.

    The tweet - in reply to an image by Guardian journalist Martin Belam of protesters at Kensington Town Hall - said: "Lets get ourselves a hangin!"

    Mr Hawkins has apologised "unreservedly". The tweet, which was posted on Friday, has since been deleted.

    A man was carrying an axe and knives in Kidderminster on Sunday night, say police who arrested a male near a Territorial Army centre in connection with the incident.

    West Midlands Police said the arrest - by armed officers - is being investigated by West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, supported by West Mercia Police.

    The force says "there is no suggestion of any threat" to the site.

    The arrested man, 23, remains in police custody and enquiries continue.

    Birmingham is bidding to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    It's made us nostalgic this morning for when the city had rings in its eyes - in the 80s it launched a bid to host the Olympic Games in 1992.

    Birmingham has outlined its vision for hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

    The team behind the bid claims 95% of the competition venues are already in place, meaning the games would be low cost and low risk.

  17. Commonwealth Games bid: Brum's central location to help it over line?published at 11:49 British Summer Time 19 June 2017

    Birmingham has today submitted its bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

    The bid team says the opening and closing ceremonies would be held at Alexander Stadium which would be refurbished.

    Also outlined is Birmingham's travel links, with the bid team saying "28 million people are within two hours’ drive" of the city, with "90% of the UK within four hours’ travel".

    Jaguar Land Rover's plan to hire 5,000 staff is a drive to enhance its expertise in autonomous and electric technology.

    The firm said it would hire 1,000 electronic and software engineers and 4,000 workers across other sectors, including manufacturing.

    The carmaker, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, employs more than 40,000 people globally.
