I understand West Midlands Police are very unhappy at the leniency of the sentence for three men who were caught driving at speeds of more than 130 miles an hour.

The men were involved in an illegal night time race in Birmingham, in March, but have been spared jail terms.

Jason Wakeford, spokesman for Brake, the road safety charity, said "it's shocking" the defendants have not been jailed because no one was killed or injured.

    Phil Mackie
    Midlands correspondent, BBC News

A judge handing three men suspended prison sentences after they were filmed speeding at 134mph on a dual carriageway said he took into account that they used their indicators while racing.

That they pulled over at the sound of police sirens - and that there was no accident - was also considered in sentencing the men who reached the speeds in Birmingham in March.

At the city's crown court the trio - Amar Paul, Tejinder Bhuee and Zafar Iqbal - were disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined. Their six-month prison sentences have been suspended for two years.

  19. MP calls for more resources over smear test results delaypublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

The MP for Birmingham Yardley, Jess Phillips, is calling on the government to give more resources to the NHS after it emerged 80% of NHS areas in England are failing to meet the two-week deadline to give women smear test results.
