    Residents on a major route into Coventry say they've had no advance warning about roadworks starting this morning, closing part of their road until early September.

    Work to replace the gas mains on a section of Broad Lane has shut the road in one direction for six weeks.

    Pauline East, who lives in the road, said they'd received no communication about the closure and peak times on a normal day are "just awful".

    National Grid, which is carrying out the work, insists it has let residents know, but will "take on board" the complaints.

  2. Thousands of homes affected by burst water mainpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 26 July 2016

    About 2,000 properties are affected by the burst water main at Kirby Corner Road in Coventry, says Severn Trent.

    Engineers are at the scene, on the corner of Lynchgate Road, and say supplies should be resumed later this morning.

    Buses and traffic are being diverted.

    Coventry Bees will continue to race at Brandon Stadium for another year after being offered a new lease from 2017.

    The Elite League speedway side previously feared their future relied on ground share deal.

    After talks with the new landowner, who plans to develop the site for housing, there is the possibility of a further two-year extension to the new lease.

    A visually impaired campaigner from Coventry wants the prime minister to make roads safer for people like her. 

    Charlotte Nickson is part of a group going to Downing Street to raise their concerns about shared space schemes, which involve removing kerbs and controlled crossings.

    She says they are dangerous for people with sight problems.

    The scheme is designed to make motorists think more about safer driving.

    Three men have been jailed for their part in a burglary ring operating in Coventry and Warwickshire. 

    The trio, along with a woman and a youth, were sentenced on Thursday, having all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary at an earlier hearing, West Midlands Police said, external.

    Police have issued the following details on the five:

    - Caroline Browne, aged 38, of Cromwell Street, was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years and must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

    - Liam Browne, aged 20, of Cromwell Street, was sentenced to five years in prison.

    - Thomas Black, aged 20, of no fixed address, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, three of which will run concurrently to a sentence for a separate burglary.

    - Callum Flaxton, aged 32, from Woodway Close, Walsgrave, was sentenced to three years in prison.

    - A 16-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons was sentenced to a youth offender’s training programme and a tag curfew.

    Paul Broadhurst won his first major title at the Senior Open at Carnoustie as Miguel Angel Jimenez's form collapsed in Sunday's final round.

    Broadhurst, 50, who won the Scottish Senior Open last year, started four shots behind overnight leader Jimenez.

    But the Atherstone man led the Spaniard by a shot heading down the 18th and parred it for a round of 68 as Jimenez had a double bogey which dropped him to joint-third.

    Businesses near Wellesbourne Airfield facing the possibility of closure are calling for Stratford District Council to buy the site.

    The owners want to sell it for housing once the lease is up at the end of the year.

    Mike Roberts, who owns a flying school based at Wellesbourne, is a sub-tenant on the site.

    Former Warwickshire batsman, James Ord, is now the Cricket Creative Manager for Hawkeye Innovations, which he reckons is the next best thing to playing cricket, external for a living.

    Hawkeye Innovations technology has been used by host broadcasters around the world since 2001 and by the International Cricket Council as part of its Decision Review System since 2008.

    A woman has gone to Downing Street to demand safer roads in Coventry for people with visual impairment.

    Charlotte Nickson is calling for a public inquiry into problems caused, her campaign group claims, by so-called shared space schemes. 

    They're areas for both pedestrians and motorists where traffic lights, kerbs and road markings have been removed, like this one in Gosford Street.

    Coventry bob sledder Joel Fearon has been telling me how British athletes undergo strict checks to prevent doping.

    He was speaking following World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) claims that Russia operated state-sponsored doping across the "vast majority" of Olympic sports, including those in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. 

    Fearon's team was beaten in Sochi by two Russian sleds, and Gary Anderson, coach of the British bobsleigh team, has said the revelations are greater than he anticipated and there are more questions to be asked.

    Funding has been approved for Coventry's War Memorial Park to install a new outdoor fitness trail, external.
