  17. Police response to temple protest 'disproportionate'published at 13:59 British Summer Time 12 September 2016

Sikh community leaders have accused police of over-reacting to what they say was a peaceful protest at a temple that ended in 55 arrests.

Armed officers surrounded the gurdwara in Leamington Spa yesterday amid reports of "armed" men entering the building in a row over inter-faith marriages. The Warwickshire force said on Sunday a number of "bladed weapons" had been seized, later saying that all but one were ceremonial.

The Sikh Federation pressure group today said police "overreacted" to the reports. It maintained that people had walked into the temple to protest against an interfaith marriage being carried out as a Sikh religious ceremony.
