  18. Your questions: Why are we 'sent to Coventry'?published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2016

    Jennifer Meierhans
    BBC News Online

As part of the Your Questions project, I've been looking at England's oddest phrases - and trying to explain their origin.

Among them is "sent to Coventry" - a turn of phrase some of us use to describe shunning, or giving someone the silent treatment.

    Coventry Cathedral ruins

One theory is it originates from the English Civil War when Parliamentarian supporters would take Royalist prisoners of war to Coventry, where they would be shunned by its inhabitants., external

Another theory, put forward by journalist Fraser McAlpine in his BBC America Anglophenia blog, is a fear of being hanged from a covin tree outside the city's castle during the reign of Henry III.
