    There's been an "explosion" in parts of the Midlands in the number of people who've taken substances which used to be called legal highs.

    Police forces are saying there's increasing use, and that, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service, is leading to more attacks on paramedics trying to help those under the influence.

    But many of the traditional methods to treat users don't work because crews don't always know what's in the substances.

    With a chilly night and clear skies forecast, both Warwick and Coventry councils say they'll have gritters out from 19:00.

    Temperatures are expected to drop to around -1C (30F), with the possibility of some hill snow.

    A suspected norovirus outbreak has closed a ward at Warwick Hospital to visitors.

  10. Smart motorways catch more than 1,000 speeding drivers a weekpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2016

    More than 1,000 motorists a week are being caught speeding on the UK's smart motorways, police figures suggest.

    Last year, 52,516 fixed penalties were issued on 11 smart sections, including stretches of the M6 and M42 around Coventry and Warwickshire.

    Smart motorways are operated by Highways England which uses overhead gantries - also containing speed cameras - to direct traffic into open lanes and change speed limits depending on volume.

    Young cancer patient Alex Goodwin had a break from his hospital treatment at the weekend when he arrived at the Leek Wootton police headquarters in Warwickshire with an escort of motorbike riders and police horses.

    It was to see the making of a music video - featuring hundreds of emergency services workers - to accompany a fundraising song.

    Alex and his family are trying to raise £120,000 for proton beam therapy outside the UK, because the NHS may not fund some of his treatment.  

    He has been sharing his progress with his thousands of followers on Twitter, external and on his blog, external.

    It's claimed an increase in people taking substances formerly known as legal highs across the West Midlands is leading to more attacks on paramedics. 

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says staff trying to treat users are often subject to abuse and it's difficult to help them as they don't know the contents of the drugs they've taken.

    The 16-year-old was approached by a man on Holbrook Avenue around 22:20. He took hold of her arm and told her to go with him, police say.

    She managed to get away but was put "through a frightening ordeal".

     A cut in the benefits cap - a limit on the income working age households can receive in certain benefits - has now come into force.  

    The city council says around 800 families in Coventry will be affected by the change, with each household losing around £85 a week.

  18. JLR 'not proceeding' with Silverstone planspublished at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2016

    Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed it has "ended discussions" with the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) regarding the Silverstone race track.

    In April, BRDC said it was in talks to lease the circuit to JLR, which had been considering turning the site into a "heritage centre".

    The Coventry car-maker's statement said discussions were ended "for the foreseeable future" and it was "not proceeding with any plans to either lease or purchase Silverstone at this time".
