    Police in Bedworth have been viewing CCTV after vandals trashed flower beds, leaving plants and soil strewn around the town centre on Monday.

  4. Deadline row over children's centres closurespublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    A period of public consultation on the proposed closure of children's centres - criticised for falling in part during school holidays - could be extended, the county council says.

    The 11-week exercise over plans, external to create 12 "family hubs" out of the 39 children's centres providing services is due to end on 11 September.

    There was a vote against extending consultation at a full council meeting, external last month.

    At a public meeting on Monday evening, parent Kerry Carr complained: "Most people I speak to haven't heard of the consultation."

    The county council told the meeting there could be some "flexibility over the end point" of the exercise. Geoff Morgan, portfolio holder for children's services, said on Monday that should a community group need more time to present its views, the authority would "do anything possible to accommodate that".

    He said time was limited because the consultation followed June's snap general election, with decisions needed to be made ahead of next year's budget.

    A 90-year-old Warwickshire woman working towards her sixth degree believes she could be the country's oldest student.

    Joy Gibson from Stratford-upon-Avon said she didn't manage to go to university after leaving school as it was the end of the War and "the government said all the places were to go to ex-service personnel".

    But since starting her university education at the age of 59 she's completed a BA, an MA two MPhils as well as an MLit - and is currently in the throes of a PhD at the Shakespeare Institute at Birmingham University.

    On student life she said "you get to know people from all over the world who are studying Shakespeare - I've got friends in their 20s.

    "I don't go to the pub with them, but they come to me and drink my good wine."

    The victim was attacked outside Tesco on Birmingham Road at about 22:00 on Saturday after having his wallet stolen. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

    A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

    Police say they were called to a property in the Heathcote area of Warwick at around 04:34, before locating a black Nissan that had been stolen.

    The suspect failed to stop for officers and only came to a halt after a collision with an unoccupied parked vehicle.

    About £2.5m is being set aside by councillors in Warwick to fit new fire doors and other safety measures at flats across the district.

    Its seven high-rise blocks, along with two multi-storey sites, have been inspected by the council and fire service in the light of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

    At a meeting next week, external councillors will discuss the funding for the door replacement programme plus specialist works such as fire alarm upgrades.
