  2. Visa hitch leaves South Cumbrian hospitals short of medicspublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    A second Cumbrian health trust says it has had 16 doctors recruited from India refused visas.

    The Morecambe Bay Hospitals trust is one of a number across the north west that shared a recruiting drive in the sub-continent.

    But 100 of the clinicians signed up have been refused visas by the Home Office, and the Morecambe Bay Trust says this includes 16 junior doctors and six scientists who were coming to work in hospitals including the Furness General in Barrow (pictured).

    David Wilkinson, director of workforce at the trust, said: “Due to insufficient numbers of junior doctors, our trust is left with gaps in rotas resulting in additional costs, as we are forced to use agency doctors to cover those gaps."

  4. Ambulance trust says talks continue in pay disputepublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    The North West Ambulance Service says it is disappointed by a trade union's decision to ballot members about industrial action in a dispute over pay and job evaluation.

    The GMB union represents around half the trust's paramedics, and says a re-evaluation of their work has dragged on for too long.

    Michael Forrest, a director of the NWAS, said the job evaluation was being done by an external body, and there had been delays while both sides sought clarification.

    “We are disappointed that GMB has chosen to take this action whilst a process is still ongoing," he said.

    "Talks are currently taking place and will continue until a resolution has been agreed.”

  6. Home Office blocks four Indian staff at Cumbrian trustpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    The Cumbria Partnership Trust, which provides community and mental health services in Cumbria, says four staff it was hoping to recruit are among a number who have been refused visas by the Home Office.

    A Home Office spokesman said applicants who were refused in "over-subscribed months" could reapply in future ones, but the BBC health correspondent Nick Triggle said it was not clear why these staff had been refused the Tier 2 visas, as they are known.

    The doctors involved were recruited by a regional group of health trusts, and the Cumbrian trust said it is working with the others to find a resolution.

    A Cumbrian family is trying to raise money, external to help a motorcyclist from Workington seriously injured in a crash in Brazil.

    Chris Peck was planning to spend 18 weeks touring south America, but on 20 April he was involved in a head on collision.

    Natalie Taylor, his sister, said he had already had one leg amputated and now needed a transfer to a larger hospital for which his insurance companies were unwilling to pay.

    Just Giving said the British consulate was aware of Chris's plight and in touch with the family.

  8. Cocaine dealer jailed after police find 'classic den'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Police caught a Carlisle drug dealer after stopping her car and discovered a "classic dealing den" at her home and drugs with a street value of £1,000.

    Kerry Porter produced wraps of the drug from her underwear when she was questioned, Carlisle Crown Court was told.

    Porter, 36, from Osborne Avenue in the city, admitted possessing cocaine with intent to supply and was jailed for 32 months.

    Recorder Michael Murray said: "Anyone who gets involved in supplying in this murky world, of class A drugs in particular, should know that almost without exception there is always a custodial sentence."

    Carlisle United manager Keith Curle has spoken publicly for the first time since it was announced he'll leave the club at the end of the season.

    After talks with directors, he has decided to "further his career elsewhere" but will remain in charge for the final 2 games.

    At a news conference today, Keith Curle said again that it was his decision to leave Carlisle United.

  10. Union calls strike vote on region's ambulancespublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    The GMB union says its members who work as paramedics in the North West Ambulance Service will be asked to vote on whether they want to take industrial action in what officials describe as a "long-running" pay dispute.

    So far there's been no response from the ambulance trust.

    The union says its members include about 50% of the paramedics, who they say have been waiting for the outcome of a job re-evaluation for 12 years.

    The ballot will start on Thursday.

  11. Shepherds' relief as a long hard lambing season nears endpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Cumbria has a long lambing season, because the farmers near the coast start months before those on the high fells, and the Beast from the East and other storms meant this one has been harsher than for many years.

    So the county's shepherds have been watching this year's new arrivals gather strength as the weather gets milder with some relief, but still some caution.

  13. Woman unhurt in Barrow slag bank slidepublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Fire crews rescued a woman who had got stuck after falling down the side of the slag bank at Ormsgill Lane in Barrow last night.

    They used specialist climbing equipment to help her down the 20m (66ft) slope to paramedics who established she had escaped unhurt.

    The Cumbrian-based cyclist, Sean Conway, is well ahead of schedule in his attempt to cycle the width of Europe from Portugal to Ufa in Russia.

    Ten days into the challenge Sean is currently crossing the Czech Republic, external with about 3,000 miles to go.

    The record is 25 days, set in 2017. In the same year, Sean had to pull out of an attempt because of injury after just four days.

  16. Haze runs a halo round the the sun over Kendalpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Those up early in South Cumbria might have seen this impressive halo around the sun earlier today, caused by ice crystals in the high haze.

  20. Police concerned for missing Liam, 15published at 12:13 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Police say they are concerned about missing teenager Liam Johnston, who was last seen in Barrow yesterday.

    He's 5ft 5in, and when last seen he was wearing a khaki green Nike tracksuit.

    Officers say the would also like to hear from Liam, who is 15 and from Carnforth, to let them know that he is safe and well.
