    Police say they're pleased by the jail term of nearly 10 years imposed on a man who set fire to a sports shop owner in Carlisle.

    Frank Robertson burned Vaughan Livesey's leg with a blowtorch and brandished a machete in a row over property in Mr Livesey's shop on Wigton Road.

    Robertson admitted causing grievous bodily harm and possessing offensive weapons.

    Det Sgt Tracey Nimmo of North Cumbria CID said: "He is clearly a dangerous individual given the lengths he went to in attacking his victim."

    He was running in London, and had already completed the Manchester marathon, to raise money for the Brathay Trust in memory of his father.

    A man who set a Carlisle shopkeeper on fire and brandished a huge machete while making threats to kill, has been jailed for almost 10 years.

    Frank Robertson, 60, squirted what's described as an accelerant over Vaughan Livesey, before using a blowtorch to light it.

    In a statement to Carlisle Crown Court, Mr Livesey described the pain as horrendous and said he remains emotionally scared after the attack at his sports shop in February earlier this year.

    The court heard the two men had been friends but there'd been a financial dispute over a house owned by Robertson's wife.

    Last month Robertson admitted causing grievous bodily harm and possessing offensive weapons. He was jailed for nine years and nine months, and told he must never contact Mr Livesey again.

    The number of animal cruelty cases investigated in Cumbria by the RSPCA has gone up by almost 11% in two years.

    The charity has released its annual figures which show that inspectors dealt with more than 1,600 reports in 2017.

    Among cases in Cumbria, the RSPCA says it joined police to investigate reports of cockfighting and hare coursing shown in videos on social media that it called "barbaric":

    Three teenage boys were fined or disqualified from keeping animals for up to three years.

    The diver who died in Wastwater at the weekend was a well-known vet from Blackburn, Harry Michael Holroyd, known as Mike.

    Mr Holroyd, who was 67, was swimming on the surface when he got into difficulties and had not made his first dive of the day, his family said in a statement today.

    They said they were grateful to the two divers who helped recover his body and the emergency services who attended the scene.

    Mr Holroyd, a father of three, had dived in may parts of the world and was qualified as an advanced instructor.

    Driverless vehicles are being tested later this week at a Lake District visitor centre to see whether they could take tourists on trips into the national park.

    One of the electric-powered vehicles will be trundling around the paths at the national park visitor centre at Brockhole, near Windermere, on Friday and Saturday.

    The pods use sensors to detect obstacles and road conditions. Officials don't expect to see them on the roads soon, but say they want to explore ways tourists can get around the Lake District in the future.

    One of Cumbria's Labour MPs has written to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, calling for urgent action, external to prevent stroke services in west Cumbria being moved to Carlisle.

    The MP for Workington, Sue Hayman, says she's worried, after hearing that some patients may not be seen within four hours.

    Rod Harpin, medical director at the North Cumbria hospitals trust, said that even if it took more than four hours for a patient to get to Carlisle, they would still benefit from a hyper-acute specialist stroke unit at the Cumberland Infirmary rather than the West Cumberland, where only a five-day service could be provided.

    He said the development had been part of the Healthcare for the Future consultation and was supported by the Stroke Association.

    The sponsorship fund for Matt Campbell, the Cumbrian chef who died after collapsing in the London Marathon, was up to £85,000 at 09:00.

    It was the second marathon in a fortnight for Matt, 29, pictured on the right after the Manchester race.

    His aim had been to raise £2,500 from the two races, external in memory of his father, who died 18 months ago, with the money going to the Brathay Trust in the Lake District.

    Matt was a semi-finalist in last year's Masterchef: the Professionals, and many tributes have been paid to his innovative work.

    Donations to the sponsorship fund of Matt Campbell, the Kendal chef who died after collapsing while running the London Marathon, have poured in since news broke of his death and are now above £47,000, many times his original target of £2,500.

    The 29-year-old was raising money for a memorial fund in the name of his father Martin, external, who died 18 months ago.
