  5. Whitehaven Academy remains closed after asbestos discoverypublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 25 April 2018

    A west Cumbrian school will be closed again today after it was discovered asbestos had been disturbed in the building.

    The Whitehaven Academy says the air has been tested in affected areas and those areas are now safe under UK legislation.

    The Bright Tribe Trust which runs the academy says more details will be given today and parents should check its website , externaland social media for updates.

  10. Runner Kingsley puts out call for Matt's final 3.7 milespublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Kingsley Jones, a writer on fell running from Ambleside, is one of many runners who have said they will run 3.7 miles, the distance remaining for the Cumbrian chef Matt Campbell when he collapsed during the London marathon.

    The 29-year-old collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark of Sunday's race.

    Mr Jones is aiming to finish at Brathay Hall, headquarters of the trust Matt was raising money for, starting at 18:00 tomorrow.

  14. School closes for asbestos testspublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    Whitehaven School had to close today for tests after it was found that asbestos in building materials had been disturbed.

    An announcement on the school website, external said testing so far had shown no airborne contamination, but the school might have to remain closed tomorrow for a full site survey.

    Asbestos is a material found in most schools built any time ago and routine surveys are carried out to make sure it is in a safe condition.

    Askham Hall Hotel, near Penrith, has taken a place in the top three in the taste section of the Visit England awards for this year.

    The head chef, Richard Swale, said he and his team were "over the moon" to take the bronze award.

    Askham Hall was home to the seventh Earl of Lonsdale until his death in 2006, and was converted into a hotel in 2012.

    The final wind turbines have been installed in the Walney extension wind farm, making it the largest in the world.

    The 87 turbines are now being commissioned and once the blades are turning the complete Walney wind farm, with nearly 200 huge windmills, could make enough electricity for up to 500,000 homes.

    It's part of developments stretching across the sea off South Cumbria which includes more than 350 turbines in all.

  17. Knife-carrier jailed under 'three strikes' rulepublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    A man caught carrying a knife at Carlisle station has been jailed for six months because it came after two previous offences.

    Andrew Paul Hall, 35, of Cant Crescent in Carlisle, was stopped by police after his description was circulated because of an incident in Penrith.

    Hall appeared at the city's crown court and admitted possessing a bladed article in a public place.

    Judge Peter Hughes was told that his record of 105 previous offences included two convictions for carrying a blade, triggering the minimum prison term.

    A village school that Matt Campbell, the chef who collapsed and died during the London Marathon, used to visit has published a moving tribute to him.

    In a message on social media, external the headteacher at Grasmere School, Johanna Goode, said Matt was "brilliant" with children.

    She recalled a time when Matt, who was 29, took over a youth hostel kitchen with a class of year six youngsters.

  20. Lakes free range egg firm cracks top awardpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    A Cumbrian company has won one of the most prestigious business awards in the UK.

    The Lake's Free Range Egg company, based at Stainton near Penrith, has won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development Category.

    The company was set up 21 years ago by David and Helen Brass and is now the UK's largest specialist free range egg producer and packer, handling about 350m eggs a year.

    Innovations started by the company, according to David Brass, include planting trees because hens prefer to be in woodland, a practice he says is now common throughout the industry.
