    Bob Cooper
    Political reporter, BBC Cumbria

A vote will take place in Kendal asking whether local by-laws should be changed to allow free parking on common land next to New Road in the town.

In a letter that's been posted on social media South Lakeland's returning officer, Debbie Storr, says the first of four proposed questions is a legitimate matter to be considered in a non-binding parish poll.

The land had previously been used as an informal car park for decades, but South Lakeland District Council, which owns the land, banned people from parking on it last year arguing it was unlawful and unsafe.

Voters will go to the polls next Thursday to vote for all the seats on South Lakeland Council and Kendal Town Council. You can findthe full list of candidates here., external
