    Two men have been charged over supplying heroin and crack cocaine in South Cumbria after raids in Preston and Manchester, police say.

    Detectives say the warrants were executed, with the help of Lancashire and Greater Manchester police, as part of an investigation into what are called "county lines", which involve alleged drug dealers coming into Cumbria from big cities.

    They said two 18-year-olds, one from Preston and the other from Manchester, are appearing before magistrates in South Cumbria today.

    Hundreds of Furness school pupils will be away from home for an extra hour or more each day because of changes to the train timetable.

    One of the schools affected says the changes, which come into effect next month, are "ridiculous" - but the operator Northern says its being done to allow more through services to Manchester.

    The early train taking pupils around the Furness peninsula to schools in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston will be 20 minutes earlier, and the re-timed train in the afternoon will be too late for many.

    Ulverston Victoria High says it may have to take on extra supervisors as up to 250 children will arrive and leave out of hours, and the Labour MP John Woodcock is holding a public meeting this evening.

  4. Aspatria changing rooms fire 'was set alight'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Police say they are investigating a fire in a what a spokesman described as "derelict swimming pool changing rooms" in the middle of Aspatria.

    Emergency services were called to Market Square just before 20:00 on Wednesday and found rubbish had been set alight inside the building.

    Police said the fire is being treated as criminal damage.

    It's emerged that a climber died after falling from Raven Crag in Great Langdale last weekend.

    A spokesman for the Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue team said the man suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene despite the efforts of bystanders and the team.

    The accident happened at about 18:30 on Sunday.

    Urns containing the cremation ashes of a woman and a child go on show at Birdoswald Roman Fort, on the Cumbrian stretch of Hadrians Wall, external today, in a display that throws new light on the history of the period.

    The wall has often been seen as the preserve of military men, but archeologists say the find, possibly a mother and child, shows the extent to which families and other civilians may have followed the centurions to the northern outpost of the Roman Empire.

    The woman's urn contains a fragment of chain mail, normally only found in male burials and leaving experts puzzled.

    The 200th anniversary of one of Cumbria's local newspapers will be celebrated at an exhibition opening in Kendal tomorrow.

    The weekly paper first published on 23 May 1818, about three years after Napoleon was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.

    The famous Lakeland poet William Wordsworth almost became its editor, and another well-known writer, Thomas De Quincey, external, did occupy the chair for a year.

    The exhibition, at the museum of Lakeland Life and Industry in Kendal, will include a 200-year-old edition, some of the most memorable pictures taken by its photographers, a printing press, and reminders of the more humorous stories that have found their way on to its pages over the years.

    Hundreds of people gathered last night to run the final stretch of the Windermere marathon course in memory of the chef Matt Campbell, who died during the London marathon last weekend.

    The finish was at Brathay Hall, the base of the trust for which he was raising money in memory of his father, from a start just under four miles away, representing the distance Matt had still to run in London when he collapsed.

    This morning the fund, external, swelled by contributions by more than 16,000 people, passed £200,000.

  15. Police welcome 20-month jail term for abusive school ownerpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Police have welcomed the 20-month prison sentence imposed today on the owner of a private residential school near Kirkby Lonsdale for assaulting one boy and cruel treatment of another in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Derrick William Cooper, 77, was found guilty of two charges by a jury at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this year, and cleared of another six offences.

    He is the only person so far convicted as a result of Operation Tweed, in which 20 police officers investigated a number of historical complaints against a number of South Cumbrian children's homes.

    Supt Doug Marshall, the senior officer on the operation, said: "I am pleased that Cooper has today answered for what he did to the very people who he was entrusted with."

  17. Police seek witnesses to theft of chained motorbikepublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Police in Carlisle say people may have seen a chained motorbike being stolen from a house in Pennine Way earlier this week.

    Officers say the thieves would have had to carry the yellow and black Suzuki off-road bike over garden walls and then probably load it into a van.

    They would like to hear from anyone who saw this, or has been offered a motorcross bike or parts of one.

    The Bishop of Carlisle has told the House of Lords that the government's refusal to set up an independent body to plan for the future of the NHS is "perfunctory and inadequate".

    The Right Reverend James Newcome, who sat on a Lords committee that recommended the creation of an Office for Health and Care Sustainability, said successive governments had been short-sighted.

    The Government had dismissed the suggestion of an independent body arguing it would "replicate existing mechanisms".

    Plans for two supermarkets on an estate on the edge of Ulverston have been passed unanimously by South Lakeland councillors.

    The proposals for Aldi and Marks & Spencer outlets at the Beehive were opposed by traders in the town centre, but planning officers said the impact was uncertain and the scheme should be approved.

  20. Driver cleared of drug plot after £9,000 found in his carpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    A driver has been cleared of being involved in a Carlisle drug-dealing plot after police found almost £9,000 in his car.

    Gurparshad Singh Rothore, 23, from Leeds, had told a Carlisle Crown Court jury that he thought he was giving a friend a lift to Carlisle to visit a girlfriend.

    But his passenger, Jose Mboma, 21, of Green Pasture Close, Leeds, is now awaiting sentence having admitted being involved in a conspiracy to supply cocaine and possessing criminal property.

    Mark Eric Libby, 27, of Shaddongate; and 23-year-old Brendan Laverick, of Caslin Way, have each admitted the cocaine conspiracy charge, and will also be sentenced at a later date.
