    Sedbergh School has joined with a Chinese educational firm to develop a new school in Binhai New City, more than 100 miles south-west of Beijing.

    The Rong Qiao Sedbergh School, external will be on a campus large enough to accommodate 2,700 pupils, offering them the Chinese core curriculum with British International GCSE and A-levels.

    It will be built and operated by the Rong Qiao Group, a family-owned business with interests in a number of industries.

    A couple from Carlisle have been presented with the highest award given by Rotary International after they organised poppy appeals that raised nearly £1m over 12 years.

    Rotarians Colin and Margaret Wadsworth organised the appeals in the branch covering Carlisle, sharing the logistics and the administration between them.

    This week they were presented with Paul Harris Fellowship Awards at an event in the city.

    Cumbria's police force recorded a total of 27,046 offences in 2017, an increase of 6% on 2016, according to figures released today, external.

    The figures do not include fraud offences.

    Statisticians say the figures are not a reliable guide to trends in crime, because they can be affected by factors such as how willing people are to report offences.

    Underley Hall, a mansion set in parkland just outside Kirkby Lonsdale, was built in the 1820s.

    From 1976 to 2012, it was run as a residential boarding school for boys with behavioural difficulties.

    After a number of claims from former pupils, Cumbria police began Operation Tweed.

    Charges were originally brought against six men, and the owner, Derrick Cooper, was convicted of two of the eight allegations he originally faced.

    One former pupil, Henry Gow, told the court how Cooper, who stood more than 6ft, head-butted and kicked him.

    Another, Sean Hann, said his face had been slammed against a dining hall table, and on other occasions he had slept wearing only a towel in freezing temperatures.

    Underley Hall was judged inadequate by Ofsted and closed in 2012, and Mr Hann described it as an "evil, twisted place".

  7. Hundreds expected to take part in run for Mattpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Hundreds of runners are expected to join a run from White Cross Bay, near Windermere, to Brathay Hall this evening in memory of Matt Campbell, the Lake District chef who died during the London Marathon.

    The runners will complete just under four miles to the hall, the distance Matt still had to run in the race when he collapsed.

    Organisers say people approaching from the south should park at the Lakes School, where parking will be available until 20:30, and those coming from the north are able to park at the Low Wood Bay resort, at the water sports area.

    The Merewood Hotel lower car park will also be open, and Brathay Hall, the charity for which Matt was running, will be running minibus transfers returning to White Cross Bay.

    Police say drivers should expect delays during the event, as the A591 is not being closed to clear the way for the runners.

  8. New Copeland recycling scheme 'doubles tonnage'published at 13:58 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    A new kerbside recycling scheme in Copeland has collected more than double its previous average amount, external in its first week.

    The borough council says 62 tonnes of glass, cans, plastic, card and paper have been collected.

    The council has admitted to some teething problems, as some boxes were delivered without lids.

    But overall Copeland mayor Mike Starkie says the response to the scheme has been "amazing".

  9. Runners warm up to finish the distance for Mattpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    Runners will gather in Cumbria this evening to remember a young chef from the county who died while taking part in the London Marathon.

    Matt Campbell collapsed at 22 miles, just short of the 26-mile run, and in several parts of the county over the next few days people will run that distance.

    He was raising money for the Brathay Trust in Cumbria and so far just short of £170,000 has been donated.

    A 52-year-old man arrested on suspicion of threats to kill after armed police were deployed to two Cumbria County Council buildings has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

    The former owner of Underley Hall, then a residential boarding school near Kirkby Lonsdale, has been jailed for 20 months for physically abusing boys in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Derrick Cooper, 77,was found guilty earlier this year at Carlisle Crown Court of one charge of assault and another of cruelty.

    In a victim impact statement read to today's sentencing hearing, one of the victims described Underley Hall as an "evil, twisted place".

    Cooper, of Hillberry Green, Douglas, Isle of Man, spoke of being "devastated" by the jury's guilty verdicts, for what his barrister described as "isolated falls from grace".

    The number of telephone scams reported to Cumbria police is increasing and "just the tip of the iceberg", according to officers.

    They say many crimes may be going unreported, because victims can feel embarrassed, and believe nothing can be done to recover their money.

    Some older pupils will be able to return to the Whitehaven Academy today.

    The school was closed earlier this week after a routine survey showed that asbestos in the building had been disturbed.

    Key Stage 4 and 5 students are expected back at school today, but the building will remain closed to Years 7 to 9.

    The Bright Tribe Trust, which runs the academy, says work to reopen the school fully is progressing well, external.
