    London Marathon director Hugh Brasher has declined to speculate on the cause of the death of the Cumbrian chef Matt Campbell, who collapsed yesterday after running more than 22 miles.

  4. Razor thief jailed after three attacks on storepublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    A shoplifter who stole razor blades worth more than £100 from the same Carlisle city centre store in three visits over four days has been jailed for six months.

    Simon Robert Highmore, 28, of Priory Road, Carlisle, went into the Boots store on 18 March, 19 March, and 21 March, when he was finally detained.

    On 25 March he was held once more in another store, trying to steal speakers and headphones.

    Highmore admitted two counts of theft, two of attempted theft, and two of going equipped for theft, and today Carlisle Crown Court was told these were on top of a record of 65 previous theft convictions.

    Judge James Adkin also imposed a two-year ban on Highmore going into any business which is part of the Carlisle Shopwatch scheme.

    Met Office forecasters are predicting a brief return of winter later this week, with snow on the Lake District's highest fells.

    The current forecast says showers will turn to sleet on Wednesday, external with snow on Thursday and Friday, and temperatures falling below freezing at night.

    The snow is unlikely to cause a problem for walkers, but the wind-chill could be significant.

    Work has begun to demolish a village hall that has been used by a community near Penrith for nearly a century.

    Stainton Village Hall is being knocked down to make way for a new community hub.

    Fundraising has been taking place to pay for the new building and the work is expected to take nine months to complete.

    Many of Cumbria's disabled people are facing unnecessary hardship because of flaws in a new benefit system, according to Citizens Advice bureaux in the county.

    Advisers there say they are winning up to 80% of appeals they lodge on behalf of people who have been refused Personal Independence Payments.

    Carlisle and Eden Citizens Advice says the system is not "fit for purpose".

    More than nine out of 10 properties in Cumbria now have access to super-fast broadband, according to new figures.

    Connecting Cumbria, external, the county council's partnership with BT, claims that just over 92% of homes and businesses could now be connected, and it hopes to reach the national average of 95% by 2019.

    The system works by running fibre-optic cable, which can carry almost infinite amounts of information, to roadside boxes, with copper connecting to the consumer's home or business unless they have paid for a full connection.

    Customers remain on their original copper connection all the way to the telephone exchange unless tey upgrade their connection to their internet service provider.

  10. Matt Campbell: Masterchef says it was 'privilege' to have him on the showpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    Matt Campbell who died after collapsing in yesterday's London Marathon had appeared on the BBC's Masterchef: The Professionals in December 2017.

    A spokeswoman for the programme said they were "shocked and saddened" about "one of our talented contesants".

    She said: "It was a privilege to have him on the show. He will always be remembered for producing some of the most innovative and groundbreaking food that we saw on the series.

    "From the whole Masterchef team, our sincere condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends."

    Cumbria-born food critic Grace Dent has added her tributes to Matt Campbell after he died in hospital following his collapse at the 22.5 mile mark in the London Marathon.

    Matt Campbell, the chef from Kendal who collapsed during yesterday's London Marathon and died later in hospital was running to raise money for the Brathay Trust, external, the charity that runs Brathay Hall on the shores of Windermere.

    He had taken up marathon running there with the encouragement of his father Martin, who was a main supporter of the Brathay 10 in 10, where runners complete 10 marathons around Windermere in 10 days to raise money for the charity.

    Godfrey Owen, chief executive of the trust, said everyone at Brathay Hall was devastated by the news.

    Food critic Jay Rayner has added his tribute following the death of Kendal chef Matt Campbell in yesterday's London Marathon.

    The 29-year-old collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark and died later in hospital. He was running the race for The Brathay Trust for his father who died 18 months ago.

  15. London Marathon: Tributes to Matt Campbellpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    More on the death of Matt Campbell, the Cumbrian chef who collapsed while running the London Marathon yesterday.

    In a statement, the organisers of the event said he collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark, and received treatment at the scene from race doctors, but died later in hospital.

    Virgin Money, the event's sponsors, said his family had paid tribute to their son, and asked for privacy.

    Tributes have started to come in - Helen Hokin, who worked with Matt, said: ""He was a lovely, kind-hearted and down-to-Earth man.

    "I believe he was poised to become the next great innovator in British food."

    It's just been announced that the Cumbrian chef, Matt Campbell, who reached the semi-finals of last year's Masterchef the Professionals, collapsed and died during yesterday's Virgin Money London Marathon.

    Matt from Kendal, had cooked all over the world but his main business was being a private chef for wealthy clients in Cumbria.

    Matt, 29, was running for the Brathay Trust which runs Brathay Hall, external, one of the oldest outdoor education centres in the Lake District.

    It was a charity supported by his father, Martin, and Matt's first marathon was the Windermere event that Brathay runs every year.

    He was running in memory of his father, who died suddenly 18 months ago, and this morning his fund-raising page had passed its £2,500 target.

    Traybakes from Cumbria will again be on sale at Wimbledon this summer.

    It's the third year running that the company, set up by Justine Carruthers, has been invited to provide tennis fans with treats including flapjacks and chocolate brownies.

    A very active thunderstorm broke over Cumbria at the weekend, travelling up from Morecambe Bay, over the Lake District and then the Eden Valley on Saturday evening and over into Sunday night.
