  7. Your comments: Are smart motorways safe?published at 11:45 British Summer Time 26 September 2016

A project to turn part of the M5 through Worcestershire into a smart motorway is expected to be finished early next year.

However, a poll by the AA has found that eight out of 10 drivers think the removal of permanent hard shoulders has made motorways more unsafe.

Roadworks on M5 for smart motorway

You've been posting your thoughts on the BBC Hereford and Worcester Facebook page.

Gordon Boldezi thinks it is a bad idea: "There is an accident in the M5 roadworks nearly every day, it's the most dangerous motorway in Britain at the moment. The lanes are ridiculously narrow, saw two lorries actually touch each other."

Emma Canning is also critical: "It's a stupid idea and will cause a crash. Also block emergency services getting past."

However, Richard Johnson thinks it is a good idea: "They do work if people use them correctly and not lane hog when soft shoulder is an open lane."

  10. Smart motorways unsafe according to AA pollpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 26 September 2016

Work is still taking place on the M5 between junction 4a and junction 6 to create the first smart motorway in Worcestershire.

It will allow the hard shoulder to be used as a fourth lane during busy periods.

But the AA says drivers don't want hard shoulders to go, as there aren't enough places for drivers to stop in an emergency.
