    A new artwork marking the special relationship between the SAS and the city of Hereford is to be installed in Hereford Cathedral.

    The regiment has been based in the city for 57 years.

    Worcester Wolves’ head coach, Paul James, says a win over Sheffield Sharks on Friday would represent a solid start to their BBL Championship season.

    The Wolves beat Cheshire Phoenix in overtime in their opening game of the season before going down 77-66 at pre-season favourites Leicester Riders in a game in which they led into the final quarter.

    James says two wins from three against three very solid teams would leave them in good shape as they head into a two-week mini-break in their fixtures.

    They don’t play again until Friday, 14 October when Glasgow Rocks are due at the University of Worcester Arena.

    All-rounder Joe Leach is the new captain of Worcestershire, after batsmen Daryl Mitchell was "relieved of his duties" after six years.

    Leach has been vice-captain for the past 12 months.

    The all-rounder, who's taken 65 wickets and scored almost 600 runs in the championship this season, says being made captain is a "great honour".

    Stained glass artist John Maine says his memorial to Hereford's links with the SAS hasbeen specially designed for the city's cathedral.

    Featuring 3,000 pieces of glass and standing nine metres tall, it is set to be completed in April 2017.

  7. Cricket: Mitchell 'deeply hurt' by the decision to drop him as captainpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Daryl Mitchell says being sacked as captain at Worcestershire has come as "devastating news".

    In a statement on social media, external he says he is "bitterly disappointed and left deeply hurt by the decision".

    He admits to having poor form at the start of the season and that he hasn't "been at his best as captain in certain parts of the year".

    The club offered him the chance to resign but Mitchell says he is not "a quitter".

    He thanks Steve Rhodes, staff, players and supporters at the club and say he will give his "full backing" to new captain Joe Leach.

  9. Fewer drivers caught using mobile phones: West Mercia statisticspublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    The number of drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel has almost halved in five years, the BBC can reveal.

    Some 178,000 people were stopped in 2011-12 by police in the UK, compared with under 95,000 last year.

    The National Police Federation said the drop was due to fewer traffic officers.

    Here are some of the figures for West Mercia Police.

    However, the number of drivers attending a road safety course shot up from 481 five years ago, to 2,121 last year.

  14. SAS stained glass memorial: The designerpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    A new stained glass artwork marking the special relationship between the SAS and the city of Hereford should be in place by April.

    The sculpture and stained glass window is called Ascension and has been created by the world-renowned, Royal Academy sculptor, John Maine

    The £1m cost will be met through through donations by the SAS Regimental Association.

    "Quite simply, it means army ford from the Old English," said Rhys Griffith, senior archivist at Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre. 

    "The Anglo Saxon for army is Here.

    "It is likely that Hereford had emerged as an Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical centre and a military frontier settlement by the end of the 8th Century."

    The family, friends and former colleagues of a Herefordshire police officer have been honouring him 60 years after his death. 

    Sgt Brian Carter was shot and killed while he was serving with the UN police unit in Cyprus.
