  16. Vigilante groups 'impede police investigations'published at 09:26 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

Evidence from groups known as "paedophile hunters" helped police charge at least 150 suspects last year - that's seven times more than two years ago.

    Phone messaging

An investigation by the BBC in Yorkshire received responses from 29 out of the 43 police forces.

Humberside Police only used this type of evidence once in 2017, the figures show.

Ch Supt Phil Ward, from the Humberside force, says vigilante-style groups can actually hinder an investigation.

"I don't think there's a need for these groups, I think the police already do an amazing job in this area, with our experts and within the confines of the law," says Ch Supt Ward.

    Quote Message

Ultimately we need the evidence to be admissible and we need to try and get the results in court at the end of it. Often these groups are impeding police investigations. I can reiterate that enough."
