    People in Wakefield are being warned to be on the lookout for bogus tradesmen and cold callers after several incidents in the city.

    In one case, two men knocked on an elderly lady's front door asking if any odd jobs needed doing.

    She declined and the men asked for a drink of water. While she was getting them a drink, they stole her handbag.

    Officers say similar offences have happened in Castleford, South Hiendley, Pontefract, Wakefield and South Elmsall.

    A number of North Yorkshire hotels have been named as among the best in the country at an international awards ceremony.

    The Parisi Hotel in York is the third best rated hotel in the UK and 16th in Europe for best service, in the 2018 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards.

    Rudding Park in Harrogate takes the title of ninth best rated in the UK's top hotels overall.

    And when it comes to value for money, the West Hotel in Scarborough comes in eighth in the UK.

    Thousands of women who've been victims of violent crimes such as rape and assault will have access to new one-stop support centres thanks to a ground-breaking police project in India.

    The two-year project has been developed to increase access to justice, rights and protection for women and girl victims in the states of Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab through a specialist training programme for police officers.

    A woman has died after a house fire in Bradford in the early hours of this morning.

    Emergency services were called just after 03:30 to a house on St Leonard’s Road, Girlington.

    Firefighters had managed to get her out of the blaze but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Fire investigation crews are at the scene but police say they don't think the fire is suspicious.

    Huddersfield Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey maybe recognisable to millions of people around the world, but finally she can feel she has "made it" now her face is on a stamp:

    You can buy the new Royal Mail stamps from today and they feature all of the central cast.

    The company chose to feature the series because of its "very significant British contribution" in the cast and production crews.

    Lena Headey grew up in Shelley and got her first acting break at Shelley College.

    A campaign for a permanent tribute to Kes author Barry Hines has been started by one of his former pupils.

    Ronnie Steele was taught by Barry in Barnsley and along with local author Millie Johnson, has set up a fundraising page for a sculpture in his honour in the town centre.

    They're aiming to raise £106,000, with the hope that £53,000 of that will come through crowdfunding, external.

  10. Grant of £1.5m for museum's stories of street and dalepublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    A small North Yorkshire museum has been awarded a National Lottery grant of more than £1.5m.

    The money will be spent on a Stories & Treasures of Street & Dale project, which aims to "reinvigorate Craven Museum and Exhibition Gallery in Skipton Town Hall, and bring it into the 21st century, as a sustainable heritage attraction."

    The museum was established in 1928 by a group of local collectors and moved to its current Victorian building in the 1970s.

    Two schoolgirls in Ilkley learned the hard way that throwing eggs at police vans isn't the best of ideas:

    In a tweet, officers in the town said the youths had learned a lesson that "Throwing eggs at police vehicles has consequences."

    It led to a barrage of puns, including "Egg-cellent eggs-ample of a community resolution" and "Good results, what time was you scrambled ?".

    Your views are being sought over a Sheffield City Council consultation into a licensing scheme for landlords.

    A decision to raise room-hire fees for community arts groups in the city has been defended by Leeds City Council.

    Until now, groups have paid £5 per hour for somewhere to rehearse like the Carriageworks Theatre in the city centre, but now fear it may go up to £25 to match the fee paid by professional organisations.

    Anita Adams, Artistic Director of Leeds Youth Opera, says she knows the company has to pay more, but she's calculated their costs this year will be more than £60,000 - so is hoping for a compromise:

    Firefighters tackled a large fire at a tyre fitting workshop in Leeds overnight:

    At its height, about 50 firefighters and 10 engines were involved in tackling the fire on Tong Road in Farnley.

    The big chill seems to have eased as Yorkshire looks set for a week of milder temperatures that could even be warmer than Athens or Rome.

    Temperatures could even rise into double figures, external, beating the predicted 9C in Athens, Greece, and 13C in Rome, Italy.

    A landmark mill in the Yorkshire Dales is to close, 10 years after it reopened following a £1.2m restoration project, while work to ensure its safety is undertaken.

    Gayle Mill dates from about 1784 and is thought to be the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mill in existence.

    North of England Civic Trust, which owns the mill, which is in Hawes, says work to stabilise the building and the riverbank is needed.

    The attraction's website says the mill will not be open for the 2018 season.
