    A masked man wielding a machete has got away with cash during a raid at a Co-op store in Sheffield.

    He struck at about 18:00 last night, external at the chain's branch in Ecclesfield.

    Police say he got away in a Silver Vauxhall Corsa which had been stolen.

    The car headed off to nearby Barnsley Road and was later found abandoned in Shiregreen.

    Co-op staff were left shaken but not physically injured.

    Tributes are being paid to Patrick Cryne, the former owner of Barnsley Football Club who died this weekend.

    The 66-year-old had cancer.

    The club itself says Mr Cryne was widely regarded as its saviour, external, bringing it back from the brink of extinction when he took control at Oakwell 14 years ago.

    The UKIP MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, Mike Hookem, has resigned as Assistant Deputy Leader of the party.

    Mr Hookem is calling on UKIP leader Henry Bolton to quit over offensive texts sent by his ex-girlfriend.

    Yesterday UKIP's ruling national executive committee (NEC) unanimously backed a vote of no confidence in party leader.

    Mr Hookem said "the story has become about the leader's personal life" and a distraction from what the party is fighting for.

    The MEP has put his name forward to become a potential interim leader of UKIP.

    A woman from the Lake District is trying to track down a couple from Leeds after they helped her and her family to safety when her car crashed.

    Ruth Brennan, her husband and her two young children were all in the car when it came off the road near Ullswater.

    A couple from Leeds are believed to have come to their aid after the accident, which Ms Brennan says left everyone "OK" but very shaken.

    The only detail she has of the helpful couple is that they drove a red Ford Connect van and had two dogs and were going back to Leeds after being on a break in the area.

    The couple took the family to a pub in Pooley Bridge and Ms Brennan says in a Facebook post, external: "If anyone possibly knows who they are, we’d love to be able to thank them properly."

    The club says Mr Cryne, external was widely regarded among the loyal fan base as the ‘saviour’ of the Club since taking control in 2003,

    Mr Cryne has been held in the highest of regards both at Barnsley Football Club and across the footballing world, it added.

    A 40-year-old man from Scarborough has been charged with two counts of attempted child abduction.

    Police say they relate to two separate incidents in the town last week.

    On both occasions, it's alleged the man approached girls in his car during the early evening and attempted to abduct them.

    He was arrested in Scarborough on Saturday afternoon and is due in court today.

    The former Leeds United manager and England player Jimmy Armfield has died at the age of 82.

    He played for England 42 times and was a member of the 1966 World Cup winning squad - he took over as manager at Leeds in 1974 after Brian Clough.

    He was also a BBC pundit for more than 30 years.

    A statement from Blackpool FC - where he started his career reads - "A one-club man, Jimmy represented Blackpool with immense distinction as a player for 17 years, turning out in tangerine and white on 627 occasions."

    The number of women in Yorkshire who take part in cervical screening has fallen by 5.5% since 2010, according to new figures.

    Yorkshire Cancer Research says that more than one million women from our region have been screened, but about 350,000 have failed to go to an appointment.

    It comes as a charity says young women are avoiding getting smear tests because they are embarrassed by the look and smell of their pubic areas, a survey suggests.

    Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, yet almost two-thirds of those surveyed weren't aware they're most at risk.
