  6. Limited disabled access 'not ideal' - TransPenninepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    It's been revealed there'll be no wheelchair access on some trains between York, Malton and Scarborough this summer.

    TransPennine Express, external is introducing two extra trains on its' route between Liverpool, York and Scarborough, in July.

    But, while it waits for the new Nova trains to be ready in the autumn, it's going to have to use 45-year-old carriages.

    A spokesman for TransPennine Express said the carriages, previously used by other train operators, feature doors that have to be manually opened and closed.

    "The design of these carriages means they do not have adequate access for customers who use wheelchairs and may prove more difficult to access for some customers with reduced mobility or disabilities," he said.

    The company admits the situation's "not ideal" and stresses the carriages will only be in use on a small number of services for a limited period of time.

    A teenage motorcyclist has been seriously injured in a crash near Leeds last night.

    The 19-year-old came off his bike and hit a dry stone wall on the A660 between Otley and Bramhope at about 23:30.

    West Yorkshire Police he'd been travelling with two other bikes when the crash happened.

    The teenager is being treated in hospital.

    A new project in South Yorkshire is helping prisoners get back into the community after being released from jail.

    The Pearl Project, external, based in Doncaster, helps serving prisoners, due for release, and disengaged young people explore hidden talents and be creative.

    It hosts a variety of workshops in music, media and art.

    Prisoners say the sessions act as a form of relaxation - helping them combat issues of boredom and isolation.

    The sessions also help improve their mental health.

    York and Scarborough have higher rates of death for heroin and morphine users than bigger places like Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford, it's been revealed.

    The latest figures show they're almost double the national average.

    Labour councillors in the city fear the problem will only get worse, with budget cuts to the teams that deal with addictions.

    The council says the issue is a priority for the city and has commissioned a review to help better understand the complexities around addiction.

  12. Get up to speed on HS2 in Leedspublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    People in Leeds can find out more about the proposed route of the high-speed HS2 rail line in Yorkshire today.

    The eastern leg of the high speed railway will run between Birmingham and Leeds and into North Yorkshire.

    A number of HS2 roadshows are taking place in Leeds and Sheffield over the next few weeks, with today's in Leeds taking place at the The Met Hotel, King Street, between 14:00 and 20:00.

    The event will share details of the evolving design for the railway, the location of construction sites, the line's infrastructure and the realignment of major roads and public rights of way.

    The initial plan is for a new railway line between London and the West Midlands carrying trains with as many as 1,100 seats.

    They would operate at speeds of up to 250mph and would run as often as 14 times per hour in each direction.

    A boxer from Sheffield who died after a fight has saved the lives of five people because he was registered as an organ donor.

    Scott Westgarth died in February after falling ill following a light-heavyweight fight against Dec Spelman.

    After the fight in Doncaster against Spelman in February, commentators said the boxer started to look distressed and had complained of head pains. He was taken to hospital but later died.

    A family fun day was held in his memory over the weekend near the boxing gym he trained at in Hillsborough.

    A 30-year-old man had to be airlifted to hospital in Leeds after being seriously injured in a bike crash near York.

    It happened yesterday morning on Wheldrake Lane, between Crockey Hill and Wheldrake, and also involved a black Mercedes car.

    Officers say the rider, a 30-year-old man from Leeds, suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to Leeds General Infirmary.

    Police are asking for people to come forward who witnessed the collision or anyone who recalls seeing the yellow motorcycle or the black Mercedes prior to the incident.

    More than a third of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests relating to Sheffield City Council and private contractor Amey have been declined over the past three years, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    A total of 5,843 requests were made to Sheffield City Council in the past three years, of which 895 were partially or fully declined.

    There was a total of 472 Freedom of Information requests submitted to the council relating to trees, the Streets Ahead contract and Amey - and, of those, 180 were fully or partly declined.

    Opposition councillors are now calling for "an end to a lack of transparency".
