    A 24-year-old polar bear from South Korea will retire to his new home at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, external in Doncaster later this year.

    Tongki, who currently lives at the Everland Zoo, will be flown 5,500 miles in November to reach his new home in South Yorkshire.

    Staff and vets from the Yorkshire Wildlife Park have already visited Tongki and performed health checks to make sure he is fit to travel.

    Tongki will join the four other polar bears already living at Project Polar in Doncaster, which is one of the biggest polar bear reserves in the world.

    Work to stabilise Scarborough's South Cliff gets under way today.

    The £13m project is expected to take 18 months to complete and will shore up the ground behind Scarborough Spa.

    A report in 2014 claimed any cliff collapse could result in the loss of the Grade II listed spa building and put about 380 cliff-top homes at risk.

    Scarborough Borough Council said the area was "inherently unstable" and the works were "critical in reducing the risk posed to buildings in the area".

    It is expected the works will be completed by December 2019.

    A 23-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a man was shot in the leg in Huddersfield.

    Police said a 32-year-old was seriously injured in the incident on Arnold Street at about 04:40 on Friday.

    Muhammad Baig, of Arnold Street, Birkby, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

    He is due to appear at Kirklees Magistrates Court later.

    A seven-year-old boy is currently in a critical condition following a collision in Sheffield, external last night.

    Emergency services were called to Wensley Street at about 17:25 following reports a white Kia Sportage had been involved in a collision with the boy, who was riding a bike.

    The boy was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

    The driver of the Kia, a 50-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

    It was a big weekend for Leeds as athletes from all over the world descended on the city for the Leeds Triathlon.

    Vicky Holland (above) recovered from several setbacks to win the women's Leeds Triathlon before Leeds' very own Jonny Brownlee pulled out of the men's race on Sunday.

    Olympic bronze medallist Holland, 32, finished in one hour 56 minutes 32 seconds to beat compatriot Georgia Taylor-Brown by 17 seconds.

    Brownlee (below), who was hampered by a stomach problem, stopped during the 10km run.

  8. Robbers rip out cash machine from Bradford Asda storepublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 11 June 2018

    This was the scene this morning after thieves ripped a cash machine out of the wall at an Asda store in Bradford in the early hours.

    Officers say they were called at about 02:25 to a report of "an explosion and a black Golf driving away" from New Line in Greengates.

    The caller reported damage had been caused to a wall where a cash machine had previously been located.

    Police say the area was secured and a search conducted for the suspect vehicle.

    A West Yorkshire Police spokesman says: "Enquiries into this incident are at an early stage and are continuing today."

    I've been finding out how a scheme to try and help homeless people get off the streets has been going and whether it has made a difference?

    The Complex Lives Alliance, external was set up in Doncaster last Summer.

    Jay, 31, has been living on the streets of Doncaster for the last five months since he was released from prison for burglary offences and assaulting a police officer.

    His girlfriend Georgia, who is 23-years-old, was also homeless but has just got a place in a local hostel:

    Pat Hagan, head of localities at Doncaster Council, is involved in the Complex Lives Alliance and says they're doing all they can to help people like Georgia and Jay.

    The number of people living destitute or sleeping rough could rise in Scarborough if the town becomes an asylum seeker dispersal area, councillors are being warned.

    It comes in a report to be debated, external by the council's cabinet this week.

    The Home Office is asking Scarborough to house some of the 50 asylum seekers who could arrive in North Yorkshire over the next two years.

    Councillor's will discuss the proposals tomorrow - the government can still force the council to accept people even if they say no.

    Poundworld, which is based in Normanton, near Wakefield, is expected to go into administration later, putting 5,100 jobs at risk.

    Last-ditch sales talks are believed to have broken down, with the firm's owner, TPG Capital, rejecting previous offers to buy the business out of administration.

    Poundworld, which also trades under the Bargain Buys brand name, serves two million customers a week.

    Last week, talks with potential purchaser Alteri Investors, whose website says it specialises in "challenging retail situations", collapsed.

    About 100 of Poundworld's outlets were already under threat of closure, but were kept open while takeover talks took place.

    The government is to be asked for millions of pounds to help improve transport in South Yorkshire.

    The new mayor of the Sheffield City Region, external, Dan Jarvis, says transport in the area is not fit for the 21st century.

    He is bidding for cash from the Transforming Cities Fund, external - the money would be spent on public transport improvements, better links to key sites and relieving congestion.

    Mike Tomlinson, the widower of the fundraiser Jane Tomlinson, sets off on a charity bike ride to Russia today.

    Aiming to raise £40,000 for four separate charities, Mike, former Premier League referee Martin Atkinson and Darren Clark from the Jane Tomlinson Appeal charity, will ride 1,800 miles in 18 days.

    The pair are hoping to reach Kaliningrad in time for England's final group game of the World Cup.

    Jane Tomlinson, from Leeds, was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and undertook a series of fundraising marathon events and bike rides.

    She raised £1.8m for cancer-related causes ahead of her death in September 2007.

    England football manager, Gareth Southgate (pictured), has lent his support saying: "This really is an epic endeavour; cycling 1,800 miles in 18 days is no mean feat and I wish the team all the luck in the world.

    "There will no doubt be some very sore legs by the end of the challenge."

    Plans to transform York's railway station have been revealed.

    The City of York Council says under the proposals, Queen Street Bridge (pictured below) would be removed, creating more space and offering improved views of the city walls.

    It would create "a fitting gateway to the city," the council said.

    The plans also include a new Station Square and improved transport interchange.

    Councillor Andrew Waller said: “Transforming the area in front of the railway station is integral to making it fit for the 21st Century, and much more in tune with sustainable ways of getting around."

    Plans for a waste incinerator in Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire are expected to be approved later today.

    Calder Valley Skip Hire want to start burning waste on Mearclough Road, but a petition against it has gathered over 1,600 signatures.

    Calderdale Council’s Cabinet requested a full report to consider all the relevant information before the decision due to the high level of public concern.

    Councillor Mike Payne, who opposes the plans, said: "The site where they want to install the incinerator is next to a river which floods extensively and near a school and a residential area."

    He added he was losing hope it would be rejected, despite the area having very poor air quality levels.

    A 3.9-magnitude earthquake centred in Grimsby has reportedly been felt up to 60 miles (100km) away.

    The British Geological Survey (BGS) said it happened at 23:14 on Saturday, with the epicentre in Grimsby at a depth of 11 miles.

    Glen Ford, a seismologist for the BGS, said: "It is of the size we would expect people to start reporting it to us."
