New research involving the University of Sheffield indicates that such a covering was seen over much of the UK and Ireland 2.5 million years ago.

Previously the experts believed it had happened 1.1 million years ago.

The new thinking comes after analysis of sediment cores and seismic data from deep beneath the North Sea.

This work (sic) convincingly demonstrates that ancient iceberg scours deep beneath the sea-bed of the North Sea came from British or European ice sheets, rather than from icebergs from Greenland or North America."

To encourage people to get out and about, the council says improved footpaths, less litter, new walking routes and more activities are planned.

Many roads in York and other parts of the county already have the lower limit in place, particularly near schools.

"The lower speed limit will mean children coming out of school would be far more likely to survive [if they were hit by a car]," he said.

"Introducing the scheme would be a lot of work and enforcement would be difficult but at least it would slow drivers down."
