    A man accused of sending letters promoting "Punish a Muslim Day" has been charged with soliciting to murder, counter-terror police have said.

    Anonymous notes calling for a co-ordinated attacked on Muslims were sent to addresses across the UK - including West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

    David Parnham, 35, from Lincoln, has been charged with 14 offences in total, including staging a bomb hoax and sending threatening letters.

    He is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday.

    Counter Terrorism Policing North East said Mr Parnham was charged "in connection with an ongoing investigation into offensive communications".

    Former Argentina and Chile manager Marcelo Bielsa has signed a contract to become the new head coach of Leeds United.

    The 62-year-old, who was sacked from French club Lille last year, is believed to have had the deal e-mailed to the club from South America last night.

    He's expected in Leeds next weekend before pre-season training begins.

    Bielsa has previously managed clubs in his native Argentina, Spain, France, as well as Chile's national side.

    His appointment means Leeds are set to start the season with a new manager for a fifth successive year.

    A "lunatic" driver from North Yorkshire who ran over and killed an 18-year-old student the day before her final A-level exam has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

    Kate Whalley was hit by a black Ford Fiesta ST driven by Kieran McGowan, 23, on the A660 near Leeds on 22 June 2017. She died two days later.

    She was kept alive so nine of her organs could be donated to help others.

    McGowan, from Harrogate, admitted causing death by dangerous driving at a previous Leeds Crown Court hearing.

    Sentencing him, Judge Christopher Batty told McGowan, of Knox Way, his "selfish and lunatic behaviour" had directly led to the student's fatal head injuries.

    He said: "It was a display of selfishness and arrogance and, as is so often the case, the person who paid the price was an innocent young girl who was making her way home."

    The teenager had just completed her penultimate exam at Harrogate Grammar School when she was struck by the car as it went round a tight bend in Pool-in-Wharfedale.

    An investigation is due to begin later into what caused a fire at a retirement housing complex in York last night.

    More than 40 firefighters and eight fire engines were called out to the incident in Haxby after the blaze broke out in one of the 28 flats at Jubilee Court.

    All the residents were evacuated safely, but Yorkshire Housing - which manages the complex - says eight people were found alternative accommodation for the night.

    Officers were called to an address on Mill View earlier this month by the landlord - they found the house was being used to grow cannabis in what they described as a "sophisticated" set up.

    A car park in Leeds is in the running to be crowned the "coolest in the world."

    The new multi-storey at the Victoria Gate development in Leeds city centre is one of 10 shortlisted in the competition, external.

    The list is hoping to prove car parks don't have to be "boring and grey".

    Other car parks making the list include a robotic car park in Kuwait and one in Seattle that resembles a sinking ship.

    The car park is for shoppers in the adjoining retail development which opened in 2016.
