    The trust which runs hospitals in Bradford still need to make improvements, the Care Quality Commission, external says.

    A recent inspection highlighted a number of issues, external at the trust, which runs Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital.

    It received the same rating in 2016 but the Commission said there had been improvements and the trust was

    Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Ted Baker, said: “Although the overall rating for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust remains 'requires improvement', I am pleased to report we found real improvement in a number of areas."

  2. Man critically ill after motorway crashpublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    A man's been left with life-threatening injuries after an accident on the M1 in the early hours of this morning.

    The 33-year-old's car hit the central reservation of the northbound carriageway, close to junction 33, at about 02:30.

    He has serious head injuries and police have appealed for witnesses.

  3. Sheep-eating plant emerges from greenhouse roofpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    A plant capable of trapping and eating sheep has burst through the roof of a greenhouse in a park in Leeds.

    The Puya chilensis has bloomed at Golden Acre Park, external in the city.

    After a spurt which saw it reach a height of more than 2 metres, staff were left with little choice but to remove part of the greenhouse roof.

    It was named the 'sheep-eater' because its leaves are lined with spines which are known to trap sheep and small mammals.

    Despite the name the plant doesn't actually consume the trapped animal.

    Scientists believe they become trapped in the spikes, starve to death, decompose at the plant's base and then the plant feeds off the remains.

    Staff at the park said the plant bursting into bloom is quite rare and they've waited 15 years to see it.

  4. Sentencing of Bradford toddler death fall motherpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    A Bradford woman is due to be sentenced today after her son fell to his death from a block of flats.

    Elliot Procter fell from the Newcastle House block of flats in Bradford in October 2017.

    He was 18-months-old and died from his injuries.

    His mother, Gemma Proctor, who's 23, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and will be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court later.

  5. Watch: York Minster all lit up in bid to protect windowspublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    York Minster is to be lit up this weekend to mark the start of a project to protect its stained glass windows.

    More than half of the historic cathedral's 128 windows, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, currently have no protection from the elements.

    Over the weekend, the doors at the Minster will be open after hours for a new sound and light projection, inspired by its stained glass and architecture.

    The experience has been put together by Artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid.

    Concern is growing for a man from Sheffield who hasn't been seen since last weekend.

    Matthew Cavill, 27, sent a message to a family member after last being seen on Dyke Vale Close in Hackenthorpe last Sunday morning.

    It is not known what he's wearing but he is described as being about 5ft 10ins tall, with blue eyes, stubble and short brown hair.

    It’s "out of character" for Matthew not to turn up to work or contact family and police are asking for help in finding him.

    The second phase of the Great Yorkshire Way, external will be officially opened today.

    Work on phase two of the road began a year ago and is now complete.

    It links the M18 to Doncaster-Sheffield Airport, external, as well as White Rose Way and Lakeside, where the new National College for High Speed Rail, external has been built, along with links to the iPort, external development.

    Argentine Marcelo Bielsa has been appointed Leeds United's new head coach, the club has confirmed.

    The club opened talks with Bielsa shortly after sacking Paul Heckingbottom on 1 June and the 62-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with an option for a third year.

    Bielsa has previously managed clubs in his native Argentina, Spain and France, as well as Chile's national side.

    In a statement on the club's website, external, he says: "I am delighted to accept the role of head coach at Leeds United.

    "It has always been my ambition to work in England and I have had several opportunities to do so during my career.

    "However, I have always felt it was important to wait for the right project to come along and so when a club with Leeds United’s history made me an offer, it was impossible to turn down."

    The cause of a blaze at a retirement complex on the outskirts of York last night is still unknown.

    An investigation is due to start later into what started the fire at Jubilee Court in Haxby.

    About 40 firefighters and eight fire engines were called out to the incident after the blaze broke out in one of the 28 flats.

    All the residents were evacuated safely.

    Schools in Sheffield will lose more than £100 per pupil in the next five years, according to the National Association of Headteachers.

    The union claims 131 of 154 schools in Sheffield face cuts and are in "crisis".

    It comes as an Education Summit attended by parents, teachers and MPs is due to be held in the city this afternoon.

    The Department for Education says the claims are misleading and argues funding will rise in real terms, with an increase of 6.6%.

    Police are treating the death of a teenage boy in North Yorkshire as "unexplained" after an extensive search to find him.

    Officers were called regarding the welfare of the 17-year-old at about 20:30 last night.

    He was found at Blakey Ridge in Castleton at about 22:30 and pronounced dead at the scene.

    Enquiries are continuing.

  18. Cash boost to combat homelessness in Sheffieldpublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Sheffield City Council is set to receive £363,000 this year to tackle rough sleeping across the city.

    The cash, from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, will be used to fund suitable housing for individual rough sleepers and to give them the support they need to be able to stay in that housing.

    More emergency accommodation for those who find themselves in crisis will also be made available and options for longer term housing will be improved.
