Average speed cameras, the first permanent ones in Derbyshire, are being switched on in a stretch of roadworks on the A52 near Derby.

The current limit at the Wyvern is 40mph but will be raised to 50 - down from the original 70 - when the system is fully operational later this year.

The city council said lowering the speed limit would make the road safer and cut congestion.

Fines from the new cameras will not be handed out until the roadworks are lifted and the council said it did not receive any of the money.

  2. Judge approves hysterectomy on mentally ill womanpublished at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2020

    PA Media

Doctors can perform a hysterectomy on a mentally ill woman suffering from cancer of the womb, a Court of Protection judge has ruled.

The woman, who is middle-aged, would not agree to surgery and told doctors only God could cure her cancer.

But Mr Justice Hayden ruled she lacked the mental capacity to make decisions and concluded a hysterectomy was in her best interests.

He said the woman's "expressed religious beliefs" were a facet of her mental health difficulties.

The judge analysed the case at a public hearing in the Court of Protection, where issues relating to people who may lack the mental capacity to make decisions are considered, in London on Thursday.

He said the woman could not be identified in media reports of the case.

Bosses at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have responsibility for her care and asked the judge to rule a hysterectomy was in her best interests.

    PA Media

Former England and Leicester City striker Emile Heskey has revealed he was chased down the street by a man shouting racist abuse when he was a young academy player with the Foxes.

Heskey - who went on to play 62 times for England - said the incident happened outside the club's stadium a few years before he made his professional debut.

He said: "I got chased from a Leicester game. I was 13 or 14. Fast-forward three-and-a-half years, that same guy might have been chanting my name.

"It was part of society and part of my upbringing. I can't say it was good but it made me who I am."

However, he said he never experienced any racial abuse as a player at English grounds.

"I can't say that I got any abuse in England, it was always abroad," he said.

  15. 'Coronavirus, not snow, is the talk of the town'published at 17:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2020

    Rob Sissons
    East Midlands Today Reporter

I have been on the scene in the town of Buxton, where a school and medical centre have been closed due to a confirmed case of coronavirus.

Buxton is the highest market town above sea level in England and has had heavy snow this week.

But coronavirus, not snow, seems to be the talk of the town.

Doctor Peter Holden, who represents British Medical Association (BMA) doctors in the region, says he's not surprised. He said coronavirus, like flu, will end up going round.

All of this presents a dilemma for parents: How do you explain the complex story that is coronavirus to children?

The answer, I guess, is keep it simple, but as we know, the spread of the virus is anything but.

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

More lanes in and out of Nottingham could be closed as Trent Bridge undergoes £1.1m maintenance work from next week.

It may sound like a potential nightmare for drivers caught up in the fall-out of the Clifton Bridge repairs, but Nottingham City Council said it expects the impact on traffic to be "minimal".

    Trent Bridge

It said any lane closures needed to carry out the work - which will begin on 2 March and are planned to take until September - should be done between 20:00 and 03:00.

The work will involve repainting the bridge's steelwork and repairing some of the masonry.

The council's portfolio holder for transport, Adele Williams, said: "This repainting will help to protect and preserve the bridge while freshening it up for many years to come."
