  10. Council explores option to reopen Maid Marian linepublished at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2020

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

A council's long-awaited plan to reopen the Maid Marian railway line in Nottinghamshire to passengers has progressed.

It is hoped the line, which currently only handles freight trains, would link the proposed HS2 station at Toton to Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Ashfield District Council, run by the Ashfield Independents, has commissioned an independent report into the feasability of the plan and found there would be significant economic benefits to reopening the line.

The report estimates the line could see between 1.1 and 1.4 million rail journeys a year and could help bring more people into Kirkby, Sutton and Mansfield town centres.

On Monday, the council approved a public consultation on their plans.

Leader, councillor Jason Zadrozny, said: "I think it would be almost immoral for such a fantastic project as HS2 to run straight through Ashfield and the residents of our district having their noses pressed up against it, but not be able to access jobs and educational opportunities.

"This could be incredibly cost-effective. Reopening mineral lines to passenger trains is very easy and likely to cost very little for the benefits it's going to have."
