  9. Grantham A&E: Chair of council health watchdog 'holding breath' for full reviewpublished at 09:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2017

    Alex Rhodes
    BBC Lincolnshire Live

We learned late yesterday that Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has ordered an investigation into the decisions surrounding the overnight closure of Grantham Hospital's A&E unit.

The closures, which began last August, were originally supposed to last just three months but health bosses say they still don't have enough staff to reopen it fully.

The county council's health scrutiny committee voted to refer the decision to shut the unit overnight to Mr Hunt in November and now an Independent Panel is looking into it.

The chair of the committee, Christine Talbot, has welcomed the decision.

    Quote Message

I'm absolutely delighted... He's asked the report to come back to him by the 22nd of March by the latest. That means we might get a full review and I'm holding my breath that that is the case.

It's been a really, really scary time and I have to say it continues to be a scary time. This disease hasn't gone away. Only the measures put in place by the poultry industry has prevented it from spreading and turning into a sort of wildfire like in parts of Europe.

The Government has confirmed that Lincolnshire's overall grant from Whitehall will be reduced by just under a million pounds, to £64.5mil.

It's already been announced that the police's share of council tax bills will rise by just under two percent - and will be enough to make up the shortfall.
