Badgers may not transmit TB to cattle by direct contact, according to new research.
A study suggests that cows contract the disease by coming into contact with infected faeces and urine in pasture.
The scientists involved suggest that advice given to farmers to control the spread of the disease may need to be reassessed.
The research has been published in Ecology Letters.

In Shropshire, the median annual gross salary is £25,574, leaving £1,713 a month after tax and National Insurance contributions. Experts recommend spending no more than 30% of this on housing, which would be £514.
An average studio flat costs £327 a month. A similar one-bedroom property costs about £430 a month, while a two-bedroom home is about £530.
In Telford and Wrekin, the median annual gross salary is £24,149, leaving £1,632 a month after tax and National Insurance contributions. Experts recommend spending no more than 30% of this on housing, which would be £490.
An average studio flat costs £336 a month. A one-bedroom property costs about £441 a month while a two-bedroom home is about £542.
People spend more than a third of their disposable income on rent across large parts of England, a BBC investigation has found.
Analysis shows the average rent of a one-bedroom property in almost half of all districts, boroughs and cities would cost more than 30% of the median take-home salary for the area.

AFC Telford United's Dan Preston has revealed he's lucky to be playing after a footballing injury nearly left him paralysed.
Preston has rejoined the Bucks three years after leaving to join Tamworth. But shortly after his move he suffered a fractured skull in a game against Leamington, leaving him with a blood clot on the brain.
He's now made a full recovery but admits he's lucky to be playing.

On the A5 around Shrewsbury traffic is slow after two separate incidents.
There are delays between the Dobbies Island and Edgebold Roundabout due to a broken down vehicle.
Meanwhile, one lane is closed on the Westbound A5 before the Preston Island due to a broken down vehicle.
And the A483 is blocked in both directions at the Mile End Roundabout in Oswestry due to an accident.

The final two rounds of the British BMX series are being staged at Dawley in Telford for the first time - today and over the weekend.
Practice starts at 16:00 this afternoon with racing getting under way at 12:00 tomorrow.
The racers are aged from five to 56.

Zac Presland from Telford has Down's syndrome and moderate learning difficulties, but that hasn't stopped him from getting stuck into playing rugby.
The 22-year-old has written a blog, external about playing for the Shropshire Stags team, which trains in Bishop's Castle.

The leader of Shropshire Council, Malcolm Pate, has given his support to Shaun Davies, leader of Telford and Wrekin Council in his "fairer funding" bid.
Mr Davies says they're losing out on £12m every year and he wants the regions two MPs to help him lobby ministers to ask for more.
Mr Pate says by the same calculation Shropshire Council's shortfall is £35m per year between the authority and the average council.
