In 1976 the Midlands experienced its hottest summer since records began.
The appointment of an MP from the region as Minister for Drought helped bring the crisis to an end in August.
As I've been finding out, the effects of the drought are still being felt 40 years on - see more on Midlands Today from 18:30.
Two redundant Shropshire Methodist churches have been auctioned for well above their guide prices.
The smaller one, at Edgerley (below) near Pentre fetched £54,000. That's more than five-times the original valuation.
The other at Melverley (below) went for £61,000, three times the estimate.

A woman in her 20s has been airlifted to hospital after her motorbike collided with a lorry on the A41 in Hinstock.
She was thrown on to a grass verge, breaking her leg.
The ambulance service says her full leathers and helmet almost certainly saved her from more serious injuries.

Micky Mellon is dismissing Shrewsbury Town's mixed bag of pre-season results as no indicator for the way the season will go.
Town start the new League One campaign on Saturday and Mellon says any defeat, goal against or miss in the build up is better than coasting through every friendly you play.

A house hit by a lorry is being demolished due to a "high risk" to the public.

Tink jumped on top of Claire Hopkinson who was asleep in bed when an electrical fault sparked a fire at a neighbouring property in Shrewsbury. Her family managed to get out of the house safely but Tink was overcome by the smoke and had to be revived by firefighters using a tiny oxygen mask.
Tink was awarded Cat of the Year at the Cat's Protection's National Cat Awards held at London's Savoy Hotel.

Dr Phillip Lee has been named as the new justice minister to oversee the changes to cremation laws following the baby ashes scandal in Shrewsbury.
Dr Lee is the MP for Bracknell and replaces Caroline Dinenage MP who's got a new role in the department for education.
It comes as Glen Perkins, founder of the campaign group Action For Ashes, accepts a position on a new national working group to implement changes after parents were denied their children's ashes at Emstrey crematorium between 1996 and 2012.

A former Prees Heath woman used scissors and a knife to decapitate her two pet snakes, external before putting the heads in the pockets of her jogging trousers, a court has heard.
Interestingly, the world record for shearing sheep was broken earlier this week, with Donegal man Ivan Scott sheering 867 strong wool lambs in nine hours.
Not sure what the eagle-eyed judges at Burwarton Show would have made of his work.
