  4. Statue to remember hospital peacockpublished at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A statue is being created to remember a peacock that used to strut around the grounds at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic hospital, near Oswestry.

    Percy (pictured below) passed away over Christmas, after entertaining staff and visitors for over 20 years.

    The statue is being built by the British Ironworks Centre out of unwanted hospital equipment and it will sit on the roundabout at the entrance to the site.

    A sheep and her two lambs had to be given oxygen after a barn fire, external in south Cheshire. 

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze happened early yesterday morning off Higher Wych Road, Malpas.

    They say, after bringing the fire under control, several animals were "affected" by it. 

    They included a sheep which the service says had just given birth and couldn't move - so they gave all three animals oxygen with "special animal oxygen masks".

  7. Work on £7m Telford footbridge startspublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Work starts today on a new footbridge to link Telford's town centre and its train station. 

    It'll replace the existing red bridge, which Telford and Wrekin Council says is too steep, costs too much to maintain and is in need of better disabled access.

    The work will cost £7m and old one will remain while the new one is being built.

    Telford Tigers suffered their first home defeat of the season last night, going down 4-1 to the Basingstoke Bison.

    They are still seven points clear at the top, thanks to Saturday's 3-0 away victory over Bracknell Bees, but second-placed Milton Keynes Lightning now have two games in hand.

    The Tigers now have two cup games coming up - they travel to play Peterborough Phantoms in the EPL Cup on Wednesday night and have the home leg on Sunday.

    On Saturday they host Sheffield Steeldogs in the league.

    The inquests into the deaths of 30 British tourists killed at a Tunisian resort in June 2015 are to open later.

    Islamist gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on holidaymakers on the beach near Sousse, killing 38 in total.

  10. Football: New Saints' record run of wins endspublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    The New Saints saw their world-record run of consecutive wins ended after 27 games by an injury-time equaliser.

    The Welsh Premier champions, based in Oswestry, broke a 44-year-old world record held by Ajax after recording a 27th consecutive win, but could not make it 28 as they were held 3-3 by Newtown in a league game.

    TNS led 3-1 with nine minutes remaining as Aeron Edwards, Greg Draper and Adrian Cieslewicz scored.

    But Nick Rushton pulled one back before Jamie Price equalised in added time.

  11. 'World's oldest' McDonald's set to closepublished at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    McDonald's has confirmed the closure of its restaurant in Shrewsbury town centre. 

    The outlet on Pride Hill opened 34 years ago and will close next month when the lease expires. 

    A spokesperson said the building "wasn't suitable to meet their future plans". 

    Parts of the building date back to the 12th Century and it is thought to be oldest building in the world to house a McDonald's.

    Workers will be offered jobs in the two other restaurants in the town.

    Concerns have been raised about the state of a water pipeline which burst near Oswestry on Friday. 

    Up to 40 buildings were flooded after the pipe - carrying water from Lake Vyrnwy to Oswestry - burst near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

    United Utilities, which owns the pipe, says it has a robust maintenance programme and is investigating to prevent it happening again.
