    A popular player from Shrewsbury's past believes the current side will win their battle against relegation from League One.

    Tommy Lynch played about 250 games for the Town in the early 1990s and in 2011 was inducted into the club’s hall of fame.

    He watched Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bradford City and said he saw enough spirit in Paul Hurst’s side to know Shrewsbury are on the way up.

  5. Man breaks wrist after Bridgnorth attackpublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A man in his 50s has suffered a broken wrist after being attacked in the street in Bridgnorth in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    The police say he was standing outside the Tasty Chicken & Pizza in Bridge Street with his wife when he was pushed in the chest by a bald man in his late 20s or early 30s - they say the attack was unprovoked.

    He fell to the ground, injuring his right wrist and was taken to hospital for treatment.

  7. No sandwiches at hospitals over payment 'timing' rowpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    There will be no sandwiches for patients at the hospitals in Shrewsbury in Telford, because of a disagreement between NHS management and a supplier.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust hoped to delay paying for the items until the next financial year "in recognition of the additional pressures we are facing".

    It says it has tried to change the payment arrangements with a number of external contractors as it tries to cut its spending and the sandwich supplier wouldn't agree to the new terms.

    The hospitals say it will be a temporary issue and hot meals will still be available.

    They have also promised to increase the number of snacks and toast on offer as well as offering more biscuits, yoghurts and fruit.

    Since the beginning of the year, 99 operations have had to be postponed at Shropshire's two main hospitals. 

    Both the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford have been very busy over the past couple of weeks.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said the reasons for the operations being put off include a lack of beds, the busy operating theatres and patients not turning up.

    It also says there's been no mass cancellation of urgent cancer operations.

  9. House building master plan to be reviewedpublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    A Shropshire Council master plan which sets out where homes should be built in the county is being reviewed, external, a year after it was published.

    The current plan covers the period between 2006 and 2026 and must be taken into account when planning applications are considered, but the authority says that changes in national housing policy mean it needs updating.

    The plan will also be extended to cover house building up until 2036 and people will be asked if the overall limit on the number of homes should be increased by 1,000, reduced by 1,000 or kept the same.

    A holidaymaker from Wheaton Aston who survived the Tunisia beach massacre in 2015 has spoken out about the terrifying moment she hid from the gunman.

    Alison Caine and her husband Baron barricaded the door of their hotel room as the terrorist went on the rampage outside. Thirty eight people were killed, 30 of them British tourists.

    As the inquests into their deaths begin, Alison described how she turned to her partner and said, "this is it, we're going to die".

  13. Overnight closures at M54 junctionspublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    We've been told to expect a week of overnight closures at a number of junctions on the M54, to allow repairs to be carried out.

    The exit slip road at junction five, heading east, will be closed from 22:00 until 05:00 between tonight and 21 January.

    There will also be overnight closures at junction six, heading east, on the entry slip road, until 19 January.

    And further down the road, there will be repairs to the carriageway between junctions two and three, heading west.

  14. Telford footbridge replacement part of larger schemepublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    The work to replace Telford town centre's railway footbridge is part of a larger £12.3m project which will also involve widening Rampart Way.

    £10.3m of the money has come from the Department for Transport’s Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund, external, with the remainder coming from housing developers.

    Telford and Wrekin council has produced a short film, external to show how the new footbridge will look when it's finished, with construction due to start in March and take 12 months to complete.

  15. Technology developed in Oswestry to cut nuisance callspublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Technology developed at BT's Oswestry network management centre could cut the number of nuisance phone calls people receive.

    The company says the "call protect service" will automatically divert unwanted calls to a junk voicemail box and can be switched on or off by customers.

    Network experts at the Shropshire offices are using computer software to identify the most prolific offenders and add them to a blacklist.

    Customers will also be able to add numbers to their own personal blacklist by dialing 1572 after receiving an unwanted call.

    Arriva Trains Wales are hoping to provide a new service in the future - a train-linked long-distance walking route between Craven Arms and Swansea. 

    It would cover some of the most spectacular countryside in the heart of Wales, and unite with established trails already in use in the area.

    A secondary school in Telford has been taken out of special measures. 

    Telford Langley School was branded inadequate by Ofsted inspectors nearly two years ago, but in their latest report, they praise the improvements made under the leadership of the Community Academies Trust.

    A report into another of the trust's schools, Telford Park, says it's taking effective action but will remain in special measures.

    The story about Shrewsbury's town centre McDonalds closing has brought back a few memories on our Facebook page, external.

    Debbie Manston wrote: "Remember going to birthday party's there in the basement area going back 30 years ago now. Fond memories of that place throughout the years. Very sad to see it's closing."
