    Kate Tebby

A demonstration is being staged at the Old Smithfield in Bridgnorth this morning to coincide with a visit by Shropshire Council's planning committee.

Its councillors are due to decide later whether to give the go-ahead to controversial plans for a mini retail park there.

    Protestors

Nearly 130 objections have been lodged against plans to build four retail units and a cafe next to Sainsbury's.

The developers say there are those who want more local choice, and this will bring national retailers to Bridgnorth with more shoppers and spending.

  16. Falling demand led to cinema closurepublished at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Shropshire

The Grosvenor Picture House in Oakengates probably closed because of falling attendances, according to Telford historian Ron Miles.

He said that at the height of their popularity there were 26 cinemas in the Telford area and two in Oakengates, but they all went into decline when people started to get televisions in their own homes.

Another local historian, Rob Breeze, remembers being taken to The Grosvenor to watch Carry on Cleo and agrees that a lot of cinemas started closing from the late-1960s onwards, as demand fell.

There is also theory is that the cinema had to close to make way for the flyover carrying the A442 Queensway (above), but according to the book "Silver Screen Memories" that's not true, because the road wasn't built there until 1975.
