    One of our readers got in touch through the BBC's Your Questions page to ask "Why did the Grosvenor Picture House close in Oakengates in 1967?"

    We've spoken to a number of local historians and cinema enthusiasts and the best we can do is say it appears to have closed due to falling demand.

    The Grosvenor features in Fred Brown's book about Telford cinemas, "Silver Screen Memories", which says it was opened in 1923 by the MP Pat Collins and the building was converted into a bingo hall in 1967, but doesn't say why it stopped operating as a cinema.

  2. Bridge near Ludlow damagedpublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    A stone bridge near Ludlow has been damaged after reportedly being struck by a vehicle.

    Shropshire Council says staff have carried out an inspection on Ledwyche Bridge and it doesn't appear to be dangerous, so the road will remain open.

    The authority went on to say it is trying to find out what caused the damage and can't yet say how long it will take to repair.

    Ruby Wax is in Shropshire tonight as part of a nationwide tour promoting her book Frazzled. 

    The comedian will be at the Lion Quays near Oswestry, talking about her life and why we all should all make time for our mental health.

    Ms Wax was due to visit Oswestry a year ago, but pulled out at the last minute after learning of the death of her friend Alan Rickman.

    Next time you complain about cleaning the cobwebs off the ceiling, spare a thought for the workmen who have been up on ropes today, cleaning aircraft suspended inside Cosford's RAF museum.

    The cleaners will also be checking the cables which support the eight planes which form part of the Cold War exhibition.

    The museum says no products are being used on the aircraft, it’s a just a good clean with mops and cloths to clear away dust that has settle on the aircraft over the last 12 months.

  7. Politicians to meet Jeremy Hunt over hospital proposalspublished at 16:28 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    MPs and councillors from the county will be meeting the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt tomorrow, to discuss proposals to reorganise Shropshire's hospitals.

    A recommendation to create one new emergency care centre for the county, in Shrewsbury, and downgrade Telford's A&E department have been on hold since health commissioners asked for more work to be done on the proposals.

    The Conservative MP for the Wrekin, Mark Pritchard, and the Labour leader of Telford and Wrekin Council Shaun Davies, both oppose the plans and say they want to highlight flaws in the review process.

    But the Conservative MP for Shrewsbury, Daniel Kawczynski, is in favour of the recommendations and says he will criticise the health commissioners who voted for the delay.

  9. Police chaplain returns to dutypublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    A police chaplain who was told to step down after speaking to a newspaper about child sexual exploitation in Telford has returned to his role.

    Keith Osmund-Smith leads a team of street pastors in the town and told the Daily Mirror he doubted whether information given to officers about CSE was always acted upon. 

    In September, he was called to a meeting with the force's Chief Superintendent Charles Hill to explain his comments and in November, the police told him to leave his post until the new year, or face suspension.

    West Mercia police said an internal investigation had been held to "determine whether Rev Osmund-Smith's role as Police Chaplain conflicted with his role as lead coordinator for the Street Pastors in Telford".

    The force said the investigation had made a number of recommendations, which will be addressed in the coming months.

    Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing again from Thursday, and there is a chance of occasional snow showers bringing 2-5cm (up to two inches) of snow.

    The former Shrewsbury Town player, David Artell, has been named manager of Crewe Alexandra.

    But the news has not gone down well with another former Shrewsbury favourite, Ryan Lowe, who said he is unhappy he was not spoken to by anyone at the League Two club about their managerial change.

    One of Lowe's other former clubs, Bury, made an approach in December for 38-year-old to return to Gigg Lane as player-coach.

    A group of people in Shropshire who recently lost their jobs when the media firm Reviewmedia went bust, are to start their own monthly magazine. 

    The free, 68-page publication, called Oswestry Life, will be launched in March.

    The team behind the magazine is also planning to produce an app and launch a quarterly women's magazine.

    West Mercia Police special constables have been praised by senior officers for their support over the festive period in helping to keep the public safe and tackling alcohol-related violence , externalon the streets. 

    As part of Operation Christmas Presence, special constables worked a total of more than 2,860 hours, dealing with arrests, road collisions, and domestic incidents, among other issues. 

    Of the 188 volunteers, five each worked more than 50 hours and 11 were on duty for between 30 and 49 hours each.

  18. West Mercia PCC proposes £4.5m investmentpublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    The Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia has announced plans to increase funding for local policing. 

    John Campion wants to boost the budget for 2017-18 by £4.5m.

    The Police and Crime Commissioner's proposal, external, which has gone out to public consultation until the 23 January, would see the extra money coming from West Mercia's reserves. 

    That's because for next year's budget he also wants to freeze the amount of cash that comes from people's council tax.

  19. Spate of rural burglaries over weekendpublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    There has been a spate of burglaries in rural areas around Shrewsbury over the weekend.

    Police say they've had reports from Pontesbury, Little Ness, Dorrington, Minsterley, Bayston Hill and Kenley, with the thieves getting in through patio doors.
