    A Shropshire centre for children with autism has celebrated its 10th anniversary today by officially opening two new classrooms.

    Options Higford currently has space for 25 young people, but says demand for places is constantly increasing.

    A "Use Your Senses" five-kilometre run is taking place in Telford Town Park tomorrow morning, in aid of Guide Dogs.

    Fundraisers will go through five zones, designed to stimulate the senses, including the sound of a live steel drum band, the smell of mint scented bubbles, and the taste of candyfloss.

    It's only been held once before, in Glasgow, and 330 people have already signed up to take part.

  7. Shropshire Council sees 'limited basis' for adopting 20mph limits in townspublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    There is a "limited basis" for introducing a 20mph speed limit across Shropshire's towns and villages, Shropshire Council has said.

    Campaigners who want to see the reduced speed limit introduced are holding a conference in Shrewsbury tomorrow and argue it would cut the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads.

    But, the council says the majority of those accidents happen on rural roads and that 20mph limits work better in urban areas than largely rural counties like Shropshire.

    It also said it is against the idea of introducing speed humps, because there is "mixed evidence of their effectiveness", but that if there is strong support for a 20mph limit, then it would consider the possibility.

    The ambulance service says the driver taken to hospital after a crash on the A41 this afternoon was a man in his 60s.

    He is said to be suffering multiple injuries after the collison between a car and a lorry between Hinstock and the Tern Hill island.

  10. Man fined for setting snare which caught neighbour's catpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    A man from Morda who admitted setting a home-made snare trap which injured a neighbour's pet cat, has been fined and given a ban from keeping animals.

    The RSPCA, which brought the prosecution against 40-year-old Michael Anitt, said he did it because he didn't like his neighbours' cats coming into his garden.

    The cat, called Jeremy, was found meowing in pain and the charity said he could have been killed if the snare had caught him around the neck.

    He has since made a full recovery, after receiving treatment from a vet.

    Anitt was fined £406 at Telford Magistrates' Court and ordered to pay costs of £300 and a £41 victim's surcharge.

    Norwich midfielder Ben Godfrey has come to Shrewsbury to gain some first-team experience and he believes he's learning a lot from his spell here.

    And he told us there's a good atmosphere in the dressing room at the moment, with the team flying at the top of League One.

  12. Graphic artist to appear at Telford comics eventpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

    The Shrewsbury graphic artist Charlie Adlard, famous for his work on the Walking Dead comic, is going to be the star guest at a comic-themed event in Telford next month.

    The national Comics Laureate will be asked to judge a fancy dress competition at Telford and Wrekin Council's Southwater library and there will also be Manga-drawing workshops and Lego classes for the younger visitors.

    The event is being held on Saturday 7 October.

    A man has been injured in a crash involving a lorry and a car on the A41 in north Shropshire.

    It happened at Rose Hill, between Hinstock and the Tern Hill island at 13:45.

    Shrewsbury Town's manager Paul Hurst says he's prepared to get some interest in his players from bigger clubs, after their incredible start to the league season.

    They are unbeaten after 10 games and sit four points clear at the top of the table, but Hurst insists "no-one's for sale".

    Telford Tigers are back in league action this weekend and travel to the north east to play Billingham Stars tomorrow, before a home match against an old foe - the Solihull Barons.

    A Church Stretton speed campaigner has accused Shropshire Council of being "silent" on the idea of 20mph speed limits.

    Tomorrow, a conference organised by the 20's Plenty for us, external group will hear call for 20mph limits in a number of towns in the county, to reduce the number of serious and fatal accidents, but Professor John Whitelegg said the proposals hadn't even been discussed at the local authority.

    The chair of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust board says any public consultation into the future of care must go further than simply fulfilling a legal obligation.

    An early draft of documents, setting out plans for will the future of hospital care, should be put to the public at the end of October, with the consultation expected to last 14 weeks.

    Peter Latchford said he hoped that the consultation would go over and above the statutory requirements and give the public the opportunity to properly test the ideas doctors nurses and experts had come up.

    The effectiveness of 20mph speed limits in town centres has been questioned by the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion.

    He said earlier this year, external that drivers are more likely to respond to changes in the road layout and that a blanket 20mph limit in town centres would require extra resources to enforce.

    David Perridge from the Safer Roads Partnership also voiced concerns, saying he supports the idea in principle, but only if it is combined with other traffic calming measures.

    And he said that if the speed limits have to be enforced by speed cameras, then it proved they are not working.
