Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust (SATH) has been trying to come up with a contingency plan for what would happen if it could no longer safely staff both of the county's accident and emergency departments full time.

That point could be reached if one more senior doctor leaves.

The preferred option was to look at downgrading Telford's A&E overnight.

But a report going to its board today says that would take six months to do.

The problem is we could find ourselves in that circumstance within three months. Being in a position where we have an answer but it takes too long is not acceptable

    Elaine Muir
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

People who need to see a specialist for brain or nervous system disorders will have to go to Wolverhampton for at least the next three months.

Shropshire's neurology service has been closed to new referrals since March, because the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust doesn't have enough specialist doctors.

It was meant to be a temporary move for six months, but, although some improvements have been made, the trust still doesn't have the consultants they need.

  14. NHS says the threat to services is not caused by under-fundingpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

Claims made at the Labour Party conference today that Shropshire hospital services are under threat because of under-funding from the government have previously been denied by the health service here.

The chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, Simon Wright, has said that staff shortages in A&E are due to Shropshire hospitals being seen as unattractive to specialists, because of the high workload and not because of a lack of funding.

Earlier this week he said he was confident he had enough money to deal with increased demand over the winter.

The proposed changes to hospital services, which could see Shrewsbury become the county's centre for emergency medicine and Telford the centre for planned operations, are being driven by clinical need, Mr Wright has said.

Nationally, £140bn was spent on health services last year, with 30p out of every £1 the government spends going on the NHS.

More than 20,000 homes were affected by the water loss and the Severn Trent has handed out more than 500,000 bottles of water.

The company said its engineers had had "huge support from local people, businesses, councillors and the emergency services" and there had been "a fantastic community spirit around the area".
